2023 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Joseph Roty

Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy, France

Velvet and Iron

Dark, brooding and magnificently composed, this Mazy-Chambertin opens with black cherry, wild strawberry and bramble, layered with blood orange, violet, truffle, damp earth and exotic spice. Smoky oak, cocoa and a distinctly untamed, savoury quality add depth without obscuring the remarkable purity of the fruit.

Full-bodied, muscular and intensely concentrated, with dense dark fruit wrapped in powerful yet beautifully polished tannins. A firm mineral line and measured freshness bring definition to its scale, carrying notes of earth, orange peel and bitter chocolate into an extraordinarily long finish. Monumental young Burgundy, built for the cellar and destined to become increasingly complex over several decades.

For when: The bottle is destined for the cellar, but the occasion already feels important.

Pairs with: Roast grouse, venison loin, beef Wellington, duck with cherries, truffled mushroom dishes or aged Époisses.

Mazy-Chambertin is the traditional spelling used by Domaine Joseph Roty for its wine from the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. Roty’s holding amounts to just 0.12 hectares in Mazis Bas, close to Clos de Bèze and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Old vines and tiny yields produce a wine of formidable depth, muscular structure and unmistakably sauvage character.

Domaine Joseph Roty is one of the most distinctive and closely followed estates in Gevrey-Chambertin. Now led by Pierre-Jean Roty, the family has cultivated vineyards in the village for 11 generations. Its compact 8.5-hectare estate encompasses an exceptional collection of old vines across Marsannay and Gevrey-Chambertin, culminating in its minute holdings in Charmes-Chambertin and Mazy-Chambertin.

The domaine possesses one of Burgundy’s greatest concentrations of old vines, with an average age of approximately 65 years. Shallow soil cultivation, restricted treatments and naturally low yields encourage the vines to produce small quantities of intensely flavoured fruit. Harvesting is deliberately late by regional standards, allowing full physiological ripeness while retaining the structure required for long ageing.

Roty’s style is unapologetically powerful. These are deeply coloured, concentrated Burgundies with serious tannins, generous oak and tremendous longevity. Beneath that scale lies impressive precision, however, with each vineyard retaining its individual mineral and savoury character. The wines are released later than those of many neighbouring domaines and have developed a devoted following among collectors.

The Pinot Noir was hand-harvested from the domaine’s 0.12-hectare parcel of old vines in Mazis Bas. The grapes were rigorously sorted, destemmed and fermented in concrete vats at controlled temperatures below 30°C. A long maceration extracted the colour, flavour and substantial tannic structure characteristic of the site.

As with Roty’s other grand cru wines, maturation took place for approximately 15 to 16 months in new French oak barrels. The domaine’s concentrated fruit absorbs this élevage remarkably well, gaining spice, texture and additional ageing capacity. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

100% Pinot Noir. Alcohol: 14%. Vineyard holding: 0.12 hectares in Mazis Bas. Élevage: approximately 15 to 16 months in new French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Recommended drinking: from 2035, with considerable potential beyond 2050. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
