2022 Saint-Veran Les Terres Noires, Domaine Des Deux Roches
Mâconnais, Burgundy, France
Pale gold with a hint of green, this Saint-Véran shimmers with freshness and quiet depth. Aromas of ripe pear, white peach and citrus blossom mingle with crushed stone and a gentle touch of hazelnut. On the palate, it’s pure and finely textured with juicy orchard fruit balanced by chalky minerality and a sleek, saline edge. The finish is long, elegant, and just a little bit wild in its energy - Burgundy sunshine wrapped in stony precision.
For when: the menu’s simple, the company’s great, and the evening’s still young.
Pairs with: seared scallops, roast chicken, or creamy mushroom pasta.
If this wine were a person, it’d have charm in spades and mud on its boots.
From the meticulous hands of Domaine des Deux Roches, Les Terres Noires takes its name from the dark, marl-rich limestone soils that give this wine its distinctive tension and minerality. Based in Davayé, in the heart of the Mâconnais, brothers Jean-Luc and Jean-Christophe Terrier craft precise, expressive Chardonnays that rival their northern neighbours in elegance. The 2022 vintage brings warmth, clarity and beautiful balance, a wine that glows with southern fruit yet keeps its cool Burgundian poise.

Nestled in the rolling limestone hills of Davayé, just west of the Roche de Solutré, Domaine des Deux Roches is a leading estate in the Mâconnais, celebrated for crafting Chardonnays of purity, texture, and striking mineral character. Founded in the 1980s by Jean-Luc and Jean-Christophe Terrier, the domaine takes its name from the two iconic limestone outcrops, Roche de Solutré and Roche de Vergisson, that define the local landscape and its soils.
With over 60 hectares of vineyards across Saint-Véran, Mâcon-Villages, Pouilly-Fuissé, and Viré-Clessé, the Terriers have championed sustainable viticulture and meticulous parcel selection, capturing the nuanced expression of each terroir. The winemaking philosophy blends traditional Burgundian methods with a modern eye for precision - gentle pressing, fermentation in stainless steel and oak, and extended lees ageing to enhance texture and complexity.
The resulting wines are elegant, luminous and mineral-driven, combining the generosity of southern Burgundy fruit with the finesse and tension of the Côte d’Or. Domaine des Deux Roches continues to define what the modern Mâconnais does best - Chardonnay with soul, structure, and a sense of place.
