2024 Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec, Château Suduiraut

Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

The Citrus Lion

Bright, fragrant and full of easy charm, Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec 2024 opens with grapefruit, lemon zest and crisp orchard fruit, lifted by white flowers and elderflower. Pear and white peach bring a softer dimension, while hints of sage, mint and cool stone keep the aromas fresh and finely detailed. A delicate touch of spice sits behind the fruit, with the oak influence discreet enough to preserve the wine’s lively personality.

The palate is rounded and gently fleshy, with a supple texture balanced by brisk acidity. Crunchy green apple and juicy pear lead into citrus peel and a clean mineral finish, giving this dry, medium-bodied white both immediate appeal and enough substance for the table. It is an inviting introduction to Suduiraut’s dry wines, equally at home as an aperitif or alongside seafood. Enjoy its aromatic freshness now and over the next few years, with good drinking potential through to 2030.

For when: A leisurely seafood lunch turns into an afternoon with nowhere else to be.

Pairs with: Grilled sea bass with lemon, scallops with pea purée, crab linguine, roast chicken with tarragon, asparagus and goat’s cheese tart or garlic prawns.

Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec comes from selected vines on the estate’s fine gravel and sandy soils, chosen to produce an expressive, approachable dry white. Sémillon forms the heart of the blend, joined by Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris. Although grown at a celebrated Sauternes property, the wine is bottled under the Bordeaux appellation, offering a fresh, savoury perspective on Suduiraut’s white-grape expertise.

Château Suduiraut is one of the historic estates of Sauternes, taking its name in 1580 following the marriage of Nicole d’Allard and Léonard de Suduiraut. Its seventeenth-century château and formal gardens, designed by Le Nôtre, reflect that long heritage. The estate was recognised as a Premier Cru in the 1855 classification and has belonged to AXA Millésimes since 1992.
Situated in Preignac, the property has vineyards on gravelly, sandy clay soils. Gravel absorbs warmth and encourages ripening, while differences between parcels allow the team to select fruit for distinct styles of wine. Sémillon is central to the estate, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, with particular sites dedicated to the freshness and aromatic character sought in its dry whites.
Technical director Pierre Montégut has overseen the vineyard and cellar since 2004, working alongside cellar master Caroline Gendry. Their approach combines careful selection with close attention to individual harvest lots and blending. Environmentally responsible vineyard management and precise cellar work support wines that retain the character of their fruit, from Suduiraut’s celebrated Sauternes to the bright, accessible Lions Blanc Sec.

The 2024 blends 56% Sémillon, 29% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sauvignon Gris from selected estate vines averaging 20 years old. A wet start to the season and cool spring created challenges before warmer, drier summer conditions helped ripening. Harvest ran from 28 August to 13 September, with 11 picking days and a brief interruption for rain.
Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris received between two and 12 hours of skin contact. Gentle pneumatic pressing lasted approximately two and a half hours. Fermentation took place 70% in temperature-controlled vats and 30% in barrels, at temperatures between 17 and 22°C.
The wine matured for six months, with 70% in vats and 30% in barrels. Fine-lees stirring, generally weekly or fortnightly according to the wine’s needs, developed texture while retaining freshness. Bottling took place on 10 February 2025.
Alcohol: 12.7%. Total acidity: 3.89g/L. pH: 3.14. Recommended drinking window: 2025 to 2030.
