2024 Blanc de Lynch-Bages, Château Lynch-Bages

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Gravel and Blossom

Lively, fragrant and beautifully poised, Blanc de Lynch-Bages opens with lemon zest, fresh pear and white peach, lifted by elderflower and apple blossom. Hints of mint, leafy herbs and white pepper bring a distinctly Sauvignon Blanc freshness, while a chalky mineral note adds definition. Oak remains discreet within the aromatic picture, allowing the orchard fruit and delicate florals to take centre stage.

The palate has a supple, silky texture, with juicy fruit carried by bright acidity and a lightly saline finish. Medium-bodied and dry, it balances satisfying depth with an invigorating citrus edge, making each mouthful feel precise and refreshing. There is enough substance for buttered shellfish and roast fish, yet plenty of lift for a glass before dinner. Enjoy its youthful fragrance now, or follow its development over the next few years.

For when: The seafood is fresh, the glasses are chilled, and lunch has no deadline.

Pairs with: Grilled lobster with lemon butter, crab linguine, roast sea bass with fennel, scallops with pea purée, chicken with tarragon, or asparagus and goat’s cheese tart.

Blanc de Lynch-Bages began with an unexpected nursery mistake: white vines arrived among the estate’s red varieties. Small quantities were initially made for private enjoyment from 1978, before the wine’s first commercial release in 1990. Today, it offers a distinctive white-wine perspective on an estate best known for its Pauillac reds.

Château Lynch-Bages takes its name from the Irish Lynch family and the historic hamlet of Bages, just outside Pauillac. The Cazes family shaped its modern identity, with Jean-Michel Cazes expanding its international reputation after joining the estate in 1973. His son Jean-Charles took over the family estates in 2007, continuing a tradition of investment and innovation.
The vineyards lie south and southwest of Pauillac, where deep Garonne gravel provides drainage and stores warmth. The Atlantic Ocean and Gironde estuary help moderate temperatures, while detailed vineyard mapping allows individual parcels to be managed according to their soils and growing conditions. Seven hectares are devoted to the white wine.
Technical director Nicolas Labenne oversees winemaking with an emphasis on precision and preserving fruit character. Environmental work includes targeted fertilisation, flowering fallow land and careful water management. The estate achieved High Environmental Value Level 3 certification in 2018, reflecting its commitment to biodiversity and responsible vineyard management.

The 2024 combines 77% Sauvignon Blanc, 12% Muscadelle and 11% Sémillon from vines grown on Garonne gravel. Harvesting began in mid-September, with hand picking and sorting in both vineyard and winery. A wet spring demanded close attention, followed by a dry summer without excessive heat.
Depending on variety and fruit quality, grapes were pressed directly, with or without destemming, or received 12 hours of cold maceration under dry ice before pressing. Approximately two-thirds fermented in barrels, with the remainder in vats.
The wine matured for six months in barrels on its lees, with 50% new oak, before bottling in March 2025. Lees ageing adds breadth and a smooth texture around the vintage’s naturally lively acidity.
Alcohol: 12.5%. Total acidity: 4.2g/L expressed as H₂SO₄. pH: 3.12. Recommended drinking window: 2025 to 2030.
