2019 Château Beaumont, Château Beaumont

Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux, France

Cedar and Cassis

Generous, assured and unmistakably Médoc, Château Beaumont opens with blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe plum, layered with cedar, pencil shavings and a subtle tobacco note. Fresh herbs and a cooling hint of mint bring lift, while liquorice, dark pepper and gentle oak spice add savoury depth. The fruit feels ripe and inviting, with an earthy undertone that gives the wine character beyond its immediate charm.

The palate is medium to full-bodied, combining a supple core of fruit with fine, grainy tannins and refreshing acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon provides definition, while Merlot rounds out the texture, carrying the dark berries into a lingering, lightly spiced finish. With several years in bottle, the 2019 offers an appealing balance of generosity and structure: satisfying alongside a proper roast, yet composed enough for a more ambitious dinner. Enjoy it now, with further development possible through the next decade.

For when: The roast is resting, and everyone has found their place at the table.

Pairs with: Roast lamb with rosemary, ribeye steak with shallot butter, beef Wellington, duck breast with lentils, mushroom and chestnut pie, or mature Cheddar.

Beaumont lies at Cussac-Fort-Médoc, between Margaux and Saint-Julien, where deep gravel soils and the nearby Gironde help shape its classic Left Bank character. Its substantial proportion of Merlot gives the Cabernet-led blend a welcoming generosity, making this a particularly appealing introduction to mature Haut-Médoc.

Château Beaumont’s vineyard was established in 1824, with the handsome château built by the Bonnin brothers in 1854. A succession of owners expanded and restored the property before it joined Grands Millésimes de France in 1986. Today, that company is jointly owned by Suntory and Castel and also owns Château Beychevelle.
The vineyard occupies a single, extensive block on a hilltop of sandy Günzian gravel. These freely draining soils suit Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Gironde estuary helps moderate temperature extremes. The combination encourages ripe fruit while preserving the freshness and structure central to Beaumont’s style.
The current team includes technical director Rémi Lonhienne, cellar master Valentin Surel and consultant oenologist Éric Boissenot. Beaumont has held Terra Vitis certification since 2004, supporting an approach to viticulture that balances grape quality with environmental responsibility. In the cellar, gentle extraction and measured oak ageing keep fruit and balance at the forefront.

The 2019 blends 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. A mild, rainy winter replenished water reserves before an exceptionally hot, dry summer. Beneficial rain around harvest helped the grapes retain balance. Merlot was picked from 23 to 30 September, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon from 1 to 5 October and Petit Verdot on 1 October.
Machine harvesting allows the estate to respond quickly as individual parcels reach maturity, with optical sorting refining the selection. Vinification uses stainless-steel vats and gentle, selective extraction to build colour and tannin while preserving aromatic freshness.
Beaumont’s maturation programme uses French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months, with approximately 30% new oak. Traditional racking and egg-white fining help refine the wine before bottling, supporting its rounded texture and classical structure.
Alcohol: 13.5%. Not vegan. Recommended drinking window: 2022 to 2035.
