2018 Cos d’Estournel Blanc, Château Cos d’Estournel

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Silk and Seaspray

Opulent, fragrant and beautifully composed, Cos d’Estournel Blanc opens with grapefruit, yellow apple and white peach, unfolding into lime blossom, exotic fruit and fresh almond. Delicate herbal notes weave through the fruit, while hints of toast and warm spice add depth. Beneath that generosity lies a flinty, almost coastal freshness, giving the aromas a wonderfully precise edge.

The palate is broad and satin-smooth, with concentrated citrus and orchard fruit carried by vibrant acidity. Sémillon brings richness and a gently rounded texture, while Sauvignon Blanc supplies lift and definition. A fine mineral grip draws the flavours into a long, savoury finish, touched with citrus peel and salt. With bottle age adding further complexity, this is a compelling choice for an ambitious seafood dinner, with the structure to reward continued cellaring into the next decade.

For when: The best bottle in the cellar deserves the best seat at the table.

Pairs with: Butter-poached lobster, roast turbot with beurre blanc, scallops with cauliflower purée, crab ravioli, chicken with morel cream, or aged Comté.

First produced in 2005, Cos d’Estournel Blanc comes from a dedicated vineyard approximately thirty kilometres north of the château, close to the Gironde estuary. The 2018 marked an important evolution: a greater contribution from Sémillon brought additional structure and complexity, reinforcing the wine’s identity as a white Bordeaux built for ageing.

Founded by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel in 1811, Château Cos d’Estournel is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most recognisable estates, distinguished by its elaborate pagodas and international outlook. Its red wine earned Second Growth status in the 1855 classification. Owner since 2000, Michel Reybier has continued that ambitious spirit through investment in both vineyards and winemaking.
The white wine has its own distinct geographical identity. Its northern Médoc vineyard lies near the broad mouth of the Gironde, where ocean breezes provide natural ventilation and a cool microclimate. Gravel and limestone contribute to a site selected specifically for Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with established root systems preserved through careful top-grafting.
Technical director Dominique Arangoïts and cellar master Angélique Vigouroux have been central to the development of the estate’s white wines. Their approach combines close observation of individual plots with precise selection and blending. Sustainable vineyard methods, regular soil cultivation and thoughtful replanting support an emphasis on healthy fruit, aromatic clarity and longevity.

The 2018 is a blend of 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Sémillon from the estate’s dedicated northern Médoc white-wine vineyard. Its proximity to the ocean helps preserve freshness, while the gravelly site and underlying limestone provide the setting for concentrated, finely balanced fruit.
Sémillon played a particularly significant role in this vintage. Increasing its share of the blend allowed the team to develop greater breadth, structure and complexity, complementing Sauvignon Blanc’s citrus character and freshness. The introduction of Pagodes de Cos Blanc in 2018 also created a separate home for high-quality Sauvignon Blanc outside the flagship blend.
The wine matured in oak barriques, with just 7% new barrels. This restrained use of new oak supports the wine’s texture while preserving its fruit and mineral detail. Its concentration and acidity provide the foundation for extended bottle ageing.
Alcohol: 13.88%. Recommended drinking window: 2023 to 2035.
