2017 Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Limestone & Roses

Fragrant, generous and beautifully poised, the 2017 Beau-Séjour Bécot opens with black cherry, ripe plum and blackberry, lifted by rose petals and a subtle herbal freshness. Notes of bay leaf, star anise and cedar weave through the fruit, with darker touches of chocolate and earth adding depth. There is an inviting richness to the aromas, balanced by the precision and freshness that make this limestone-grown Saint-Émilion so compelling.

The palate is supple and concentrated, with juicy dark fruit supported by rounded tannins and lively acidity. Its medium-to-full body carries real substance without feeling heavy, unfolding through layers of cherry, spice and savoury oak before a long, finely balanced finish. Now entering a rewarding drinking phase, it offers both immediate pleasure and considerable scope for further ageing. A distinguished bottle for anyone seeking the generosity of fine Right Bank Bordeaux with elegance, fragrance and energy.

For when: The occasion calls for something memorable, and the best glasses are already on the table.

Pairs with: Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef fillet with wild mushrooms, duck breast with a cherry sauce, braised venison, mushroom and chestnut Wellington or aged Comté.

The 2017 vintage marks an important turning point at Beau-Séjour Bécot, with consultant Thomas Duclos joining the estate and helping refine its approach towards freshness and gentler extraction. The wine captures that evolution beautifully, combining the depth of its Merlot-led blend with the definition of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau.

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot stands on the Saint-Martin de Mazerat plateau, immediately west of Saint-Émilion’s historic town. Michel Bécot purchased the property in 1969, adding his family name to an estate with a long winegrowing history. His sons Gérard and Dominique continued its development, investing in both the vineyards and cellars.

Limestone is central to the estate’s identity. Beneath the vines lies an extensive network of old quarries, some seven hectares of which Michel adapted for storing bottles in naturally stable conditions. Above ground, the clay-limestone soils provide the setting for wines that combine ripe fruit, freshness and fine structure.

Today, Juliette Bécot and Julien Barthe represent the next generation, continuing the family’s pursuit of elegance and precision. Their work with consultant Thomas Duclos has helped sharpen the estate’s focus on fruit purity, careful extraction and an increasingly sensitive approach to maturation.

The 2017 blend comprises 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the estate’s clay-limestone plateau. The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully selected, with parcels vinified separately to preserve their individual characteristics.

Fermentation took place in vats and, for a proportion of the wine, large new oak barrels. Gentle extraction and manual punching down were used, with vatting lasting approximately 30 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel.

Maturation lasted 16 months, with 65% of the wine aged in new French oak barrels. The remaining 35% matured in a combination of vats, amphorae and larger oak vessels. This varied approach developed texture and complexity while retaining the wine’s aromatic clarity and freshness.
