2016 Château d'Armailhac 5éme Cru Classé, Pauillac

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Pauillac With Pedigree

Classic Left Bank Bordeaux with real Pauillac presence. The 2016 opens with ripe blackcurrant and blackberry layered with roast coffee, liquorice and a touch of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is full, dense and beautifully structured, with elegant tannins framing a core of dark fruit and refined oak. Hints of cedar, spice and savoury depth build through the finish, giving length and poise. Powerful yet polished, this is Pauillac in confident form.

For when: the occasion calls for something serious.
Pairs with: roast beef, lamb rack, or aged Comté.

Classified as a Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château d’Armailhac sits in one of Pauillac’s most prestigious corridors of vineyards, close to Château Mouton Rothschild and the famed Carruades de Lafite parcels. Owned by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family since 1933, the estate benefits from the same technical expertise and meticulous attention applied to the group’s most celebrated properties.

The vineyard spans around 80 hectares across Pauillac’s classic deep gravel soils, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. These free-draining gravel banks allow the vines to root deeply, producing wines of concentration, structure and unmistakable Pauillac character. In recent decades, quality has risen dramatically, with d’Armailhac now recognised as one of the appellation’s most compelling values among the classified growths.

Harvested by hand and meticulously sorted, each grape variety and each plot were vinified separately in order to let their intrinsic character shine through. After vatting, the wine was run off and matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, of which half were new and half were second-fill.
