2012 Château L’Évangile, Pomerol

Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

Pomerol After Dark

Seductive, richly layered and quietly commanding, the 2012 L’Évangile brings together ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry with dark chocolate, truffle and delicate floral notes. Tobacco, woodland earth and a whisper of smoky spice lend a savoury depth to the generous fruit. There is something wonderfully inviting about its combination of fragrance and richness, with each swirl revealing another detail.

The palate is rounded and beautifully textured, carrying concentrated fruit across a framework of fine, velvety tannins. Freshness runs through the richness, keeping the wine composed as plum, cocoa and earthy mineral notes extend into a long, satisfying finish. With more than a decade of bottle age, this is a compelling opportunity to enjoy the depth and refinement of fine Pomerol, while well-stored bottles retain the structure for further development into the early 2030s.

For when: An intimate dinner deserves the bottle you have been saving for something special.

Pairs with: Beef Wellington, roast duck with wild mushrooms, herb-crusted rack of lamb, venison loin with a red wine jus, truffled mushroom pithivier or slow-braised beef cheeks.

L’Évangile occupies a remarkable position on the south-eastern Pomerol plateau, with Pétrus to the north and Cheval Blanc just across the road to the south. Its combination of clay, gravel and sand provides the setting for a distinctive style: generous Merlot fruit, fine structure and the aromatic detail of Cabernet Franc.

Château L’Évangile traces its origins to the Léglise family and appears in the 1741 land register under the name Fazilleau. It acquired its present name in the early nineteenth century. Following generations of ownership by the Chaperon and Ducasse families, Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite acquired the estate in 1990.

The vineyard’s varied soils are fundamental to its character, ranging from substantial clay on the plateau to gravelly and sandier ground. These differences allow the estate to build complexity through careful selection and blending, preserving both the generosity and definition associated with its wines.

Today, estate manager Juliette Couderc, appointed in 2020, oversees an approach centred on close vineyard observation, organic farming and biodiversity. Grassed vineyard plots, hedgerows and beehives form part of this work, reflecting a continuing commitment to the land behind the wine.

The 2012 blend comprises 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. Merlot was harvested between 20 September and 9 October, with Cabernet Franc picked in early October. Yields were low, at approximately 31 hectolitres per hectare, and around 73% of the crop was selected for the grand vin.

The growing season required careful judgement. Dry, sunny conditions from mid-July placed the vineyards under water stress, particularly on sandier and gravelly soils. Rain towards the end of September helped relieve that pressure, supporting the final stages of ripening.

Selection was particularly important in this vintage, with the high proportion of Merlot shaping the wine’s generous fruit and supple texture. Oak maturation contributed additional spice and structure, while subsequent bottle ageing has allowed its fruit, tannins and savoury complexity to develop together.
