Lime juice and lemon blossom rise from the glass, joined by green apple, just-ripe pineapple, frangipani and candied ginger. A cool mineral note and gentle tonic bitterness give the aromatics an extra layer of precision.

Silky and succulent on the palate, with a measured touch of residual sweetness softening Riesling’s bright citrus acidity. Lime, red apple and ginger flow towards a long, pure finish that feels almost dry. Generous without becoming heavy, this is a beautifully balanced and exceptionally drinkable expression of Clare Valley Riesling.

For when: The spice is turned up, and the wine needs to keep its cool.

Pairs with: Thai green curry, Vietnamese spring rolls, sushi, grilled prawns, roast pork, lemon chicken or spicy Asian salads.

Alea comes from a narrow corridor of hard red rock and poor orange-red loam within Grosset’s Rockwood Vineyard at Watervale. The fruit produced here reminded Jeffrey Grosset of the finely balanced Rieslings of Germany, inspiring a more generous and gently off-dry interpretation of Clare Valley Riesling.

Jeffrey Grosset established his eponymous winery in 1981 in an old milk depot in Auburn, at the southern end of South Australia’s Clare Valley. His fascination with Riesling began as a teenager and led him to study both agriculture and oenology before gaining winemaking experience in Australia and Germany.

Over more than four decades, Grosset has become one of the defining names in Australian Riesling. The estate’s Polish Hill and Springvale bottlings are recognised as regional benchmarks, while Alea demonstrates a different side of the variety: aromatic, supple and gently off-dry, yet still shaped by Clare Valley’s characteristic clarity and acidity.

Grosset’s vineyards occupy some of the Clare Valley’s coolest, highest sites, between approximately 460 and 560 metres above sea level. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic, with each vineyard hand-tended to express its individual geology and microclimate.

Precision is central to the Grosset philosophy. Fruit is handled gently, additions are kept to a minimum and the wines are made without fining. The result is Riesling of remarkable purity, balance and longevity, with Alea offering a particularly charming and immediately accessible expression of the estate.

The 2024 Alea is made from 100% Riesling grown in a narrow section of the certified organic and biodynamic Rockwood Vineyard at Watervale. Its low-fertility soils combine poor orange-red loam with hard red rock, encouraging small yields and concentrated fruit.

A dry winter and early spring brought forward budburst and flowering. Heavy rain during November and December replenished the vineyard’s water reserves before a dry summer and autumn provided even ripening conditions and low disease pressure.

The grapes were gently pressed on arrival at the winery, with only the free-run juice retained. After settling, the clear must was racked and inoculated with a neutral yeast selected to preserve the fruit’s natural character and sense of place.

Fermentation took place at low temperatures in stainless-steel tanks. No oak was used, and the finished wine was bottled without fining. A carefully judged level of residual sweetness brings generosity and texture while remaining balanced by fine acidity and a long citrus finish.
