2001 Ermitage Les Dionnieres, Ferraton Pere et Fils
Hermitage, Rhone Valley, France
A wine that hums rather than shouts, deep, resonant, and endlessly layered. This mature Hermitage opens with aromas of blackberry compote, dried violets, smoked meat, and a flicker of black olive. On the palate, it’s silky yet powerful, with time having transformed its once-youthful energy into seamless harmony. Notes of tapenade, graphite, and warm spice unfold gradually, each sip revealing another story from the granite slopes. The tannins are now supple and resolved, the finish long, savoury, and quietly haunting.
For when: You want to drink something that’s lived a little.
Pairs with: Roast venison, truffled mash, and candlelight.
If this wine were: A Leonard Cohen song, dark, soulful, and unforgettable.
Established in 1946, Ferraton Père et Fils began as a modest family domaine and has since become one of the Rhône’s most respected names, guided in recent decades by the Chapoutier family’s biodynamic influence. The Les Dionnières lieu-dit sits on the lower slopes of Hermitage, with a mix of granite and alluvial soils that give Syrah both structure and depth. Aged in French oak barrels, a proportion of them new, this 2001 vintage reflects a near-perfect year for balance and longevity, a snapshot of classic Rhône craftsmanship at its peak maturity.

In the heart of Tain-l’Hermitage, overlooking the Rhône River, Ferraton Père et Fils stands as one of the region’s great storytellers, a domaine whose wines reflect the granite, sunlight and soul of the Northern Rhône. Founded in 1946 by Jean-Orëns Ferraton and later guided by his son Michel, the family’s roots in Hermitage go back generations, with a deep respect for the land that underpins every bottle.
In 1998, a close collaboration with their long-time neighbour Michel Chapoutier ushered in a new era of precision and quality. Under his mentorship, Ferraton transitioned toward organic and eventually biodynamic viticulture, becoming one of the first Rhône houses to adopt these principles across both their estate and négociant wines. Today, their range spans from Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage to the fabled slopes of Hermitage itself, each cuvée defined by purity of fruit, mineral tension, and a quietly confident sense of place.
From the granite terraces of Le Méal and Les Dionnières to the alluvial layers of Les Miaux, Ferraton’s wines express both tradition and evolution, timeless Rhône craftsmanship guided by a modern, sustainable vision. Their Hermitage bottlings, in particular, remain benchmarks for balance, authenticity, and the unbroken conversation between nature, time, and the hand of the vigneron.
