2017 Menetou-Salon, Domaine Jean Teiller
Loire Valley, France
The Loire Flint Lantern
This is mature Loire Sauvignon Blanc with poise, freshness and a gentle golden glow. From Menetou-Salon, just west of Sancerre, it opens with citrus peel, grapefruit, white peach and green apple, before softer notes of white flowers, stone, almond and a faint honeyed edge begin to appear. It has the brightness of Sauvignon, but with age bringing a calmer, more savoury shape.
The palate is crisp, rounded and beautifully balanced, with citrus, orchard fruit and mineral freshness carried by lively acidity. There is still plenty of lift, but the edges have softened into something more textured and quietly complex. Think lemon zest, peach skin, chalky stone and a clean, persistent finish.
For when you want Sauvignon Blanc with maturity, restraint and proper Loire elegance.
Pairs with goat’s cheese, grilled fish, shellfish, roast chicken, asparagus, sushi, lemony salads, or a simple seafood risotto.
If this wine were… a lantern, it would be glowing softly in a Loire cellar, throwing citrus light over old stone and chalk dust.
Domaine Jean Teiller is a family estate in Menetou-Salon, now run by Patricia and Olivier Luneau alongside Monique and Jean-Jacques Teiller. The domaine has long helped define the appellation, working mainly with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir on the limestone and clay soils of the Centre-Loire. Their approach combines organic farming, careful hand harvesting and a classic, precise style that lets Menetou-Salon’s freshness and mineral character shine.
