2004 Bobal, Quincha Corral, Mustiguillo
Utiel-Requena, Valencia, Spain
Iron Bloom
Mustiguillo’s 2004 Quincha Corral is a mature Spanish red with real soul, built around the power and character of old-vine Bobal. Now beautifully evolved, it shows black cherry, dried plum, fig, cocoa, leather, incense, spice box and a cool graphite note, with the fruit softened into something deep, savoury and quietly commanding.
On the palate, it is rich, structured and finely settled, with ripe tannins now mellowed by age. There is still density at the core, but time has brought grace: dark fruit, tobacco, dried herbs, cedar and a chalky mineral grip that carries the finish long and steady. Drink now, ideally with a careful decant and something slow-cooked on the table.
For when
A serious dinner needs a bottle that feels discovered, not displayed.
Pairs with
Braised beef, roast lamb, game, wild boar ragù, grilled steak, spiced aubergine, lentil stew, manchego or aged hard cheeses.
Mustiguillo is the estate that changed the conversation around Bobal. At Finca El Terrerazo, high above Valencia at around 800 metres, Toni Sarrión proved that this local variety could produce wines of depth, finesse and longevity. Quincha Corral is the estate’s most personal and ambitious expression, drawn from very old vines on limestone-rich soils and crafted with a hands-on, artisanal approach that gives Bobal its most serious voice.
