2021 Amon Ra Shiraz, Glaetzer

Barossa Valley, Australia

Amon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full-flavoured, multi-layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.

Amon Ra is made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age 50—130 years old.

Rich and enveloping and balanced on a razor’s edge between power and finesse. Multiple dark fruit notes saturate the palate, enhanced with graceful spice and herb notes. It will age for many years to come.
Peak drinking: A wine that will develop beautifully with long term cellaring through to 2045.

Notable Awards
97 Points - The Amon-Ra is a wine that’s well know for its graceful aging capacity, and so, in a vintage like 2021 (long, cooler than the horrendously low-yielding and drought-addled 2020 and 2019 prior), the release is eagerly anticipated. The 2021 Amon-Ra Shiraz is complete, in a word. The purple and red berries in the mouth are fresh and supple, the flow of flavor across the tongue feels unbroken and svelte, and the aftertaste is padded by chewy, pliable tannins. This is a real pleasure, and not just now – it will be later, too. Erin Larkin, 2023 Wine Advocate Review, August 2023 James Halliday Wine Companion 96 Points Shiraz sourced from vines between 50 to 130 years of age in the renowned northern Barossa subregion of Ebenezer; 16 months in new French and American oak. A wine of impact and purity. Beautiful ripe black plum, cassis and black cherry fruits with hints of cedar, baking spices, dark chocolate, licorice, nutmeg, espresso, earth and graphite. Power and harmony writ large with cascading tannin, lacy acidity and great depth and concentration … I feel it needs one of those big, old Batman-style ‘KAPOW!!’ boxes for emphasis. It’s a cracker. Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about – limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. Today, Ben Glaetzer carries on this family winemaking tradition and has created a small, focused portfolio of classic Barossa Valley reds which draw on traditional Barossa viticulture but are unmistakably new wave Barossa in style.
The exceptional fruit for all Glaetzer wines is supplied by a loyal group of third and fourth-generation Barossa grape growers and comes from a small sub-region (1.5 sq miles) of the Barossa Valley called Ebenezer. The dry-grown vines range from 30-120 years old and are a unique part of Australia’s viticultural heritage; producing wines of great intensity and elegance.
Ben has won many awards for his efforts including; Robert M.Parker Jnr – ‘Wine Personality of the Year’ and ‘Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year’ among others.

Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters. Extended maceration was employed to enable good tannin development so the wine is soft and approachable early. Matured for 16 months in a mix of 40% new oak and 60% 2— 3 year old oak hogshead barrels (90% French / 10% American).
