2020 Rod and Spur Shiraz-Cabernet, Rockford
Barossa Valley, Australia
This incredible blend of Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon is a uniquely Australian blend that pays homage to the great Aussie wines of yesteryear. With plenty of sweet spice and brambly black fruit comes a concentrated blackcurrant and vanilla aroma, followed by a rich, full-bodied palate. The flavour is full of crunchy black fruit with soft tannins, refreshing acidity and subtle vanilla sweetness.
The name Rod & Spur acknowledges the contribution of Rockford’s growers who spend the cold Barossa winters hand-pruning their vines in the traditional rod and spur method. This wine is a return to the great Australian reds of the 1950s and 60’s, when Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon blends dominated the premium market. This very Australian wine is not common in any other region of the world.
Like all Rockford reds, the grapes for this wine go through an 1880s Bagshaw de-stemmer, are open fermented and then gently basket pressed. All components are aged separately in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large oak casks for two years. This allows the tannins to soften and colours and flavours to consolidate, before being bottled under the highest quality cork.

Notable Awards
93 points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review “Deep ruby with a hint of purple in the rim, the bouquet suggests forest floor and briars, especially a eucalyptus forest, including a little mint, while the palate is full bodied and fleshy, supple textured and savoury with ample powdery tannins and excellent balance. There’s a lovely core of fruit sweetness. It may have a slightly firmer backbone than usual for this wine.”

Rockford is a small boutique wine producer based in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. Founder and winemaker, Robert O’Callaghan belongs to a genre of visionary winemakers that include Max Schubert, Peter Lehmann, Jeffrey Grosset, Brian Croser and David Hohnen. His protégés include Chris Ringland and Dave Powell. Rockford wines have had a profound influence on winemaking philosophy and wine style in the Barossa.
Providing the inspiration for a whole generation of winemakers ‘the Rockford school’ embraces the inherent qualities of old vine Shiraz: the physicality of winemaking where muscle and personal touch transform the process into an art form; the traditional tools of trade (basket press, open fermenter) and the complementary nuances of American and French oak maturation.
Best known for the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford also produces a handful of top-quality wines from old vine fruit sourced from selected growers across the Barossa Valley.
