2018 Mighty Ox Shiraz, St Hallett, Magnum
Barossa Valley, Australia
Iron Muscle
This is Barossa Shiraz with serious presence, made exclusively in magnum and built to show the mighty northern Barossa at full charge. Deep, bold and richly fruited, it opens with blackberry, black cherry and satsuma plum, followed by vanilla, dark chocolate, exotic spice, liquorice and warm oak. It has the name, the bottle size and the muscle, but crucially, it also has St Hallett’s polish.
The palate is full-bodied, dense and powerful, with excellent black fruit intensity, seasoned American oak character and firm, fine-grained tannins carrying the wine through a long, persistent finish. This is a proper celebration bottle: generous, impressive and built for a table where slow-cooked meat, big glasses and good company are already waiting.
For when you want Barossa Shiraz with scale, swagger and a magnum’s sense of occasion.
Pairs with slow-cooked beef, lamb shoulder, ribeye steak, barbecue brisket, venison pie, smoky aubergine, or aged cheddar.
If this wine were… a machine, it would be an old iron press in a Barossa shed: heavy, beautiful and still doing serious work.
St Hallett is one of the Barossa’s defining Shiraz producers, established in 1944 and widely recognised for its deep understanding of old vines, grower parcels and regional expression. Mighty Ox comes from northern Barossa vineyards in Ebenezer, Greenock and Moppa Hills, with vines around 25 years old and fruit grown on rich clay soils. The wine is matured in seasoned American oak and released only in 1.5L magnum, giving this Shiraz both the scale and the cellaring potential to match its name.
