2017 Nebu Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz, Grant Burge

Barossa Valley, Australia

The Barossa Night

This is a grand Barossa red with Cabernet in the driver’s seat and Shiraz bringing the velvet. Deep, dark and richly composed, it opens with blackcurrant, cassis, plum and dark cherry, followed by black coffee, mint chocolate, earth, spice and a polished touch of oak. There is power here, but it is not just brawn. The Cabernet gives the wine its frame and freshness, while the Shiraz fills the middle with warmth, depth and dark-fruited generosity.

The palate is bold, layered and luxurious, with berries, mocha, dark chocolate, plum and spice moving through a smooth, creamy finish. The tannins are present but now settling beautifully, giving the wine structure without hardness. It is mature enough to drink with pleasure now, but still has the concentration and balance to continue developing. A serious bottle for red meat, winter tables and anyone who likes their Barossa with both polish and authority. Peak drinking from 2020 to 2040.

For when you want the comfort of Barossa Shiraz with the backbone of Cabernet.
Pairs with roast beef, ribeye steak, lamb shoulder, venison, slow-cooked brisket, hard cheeses, or mushroom and ale pie.
If this wine were… a skyline, it would be Barossa at midnight: dark, wide, star-filled and quietly magnificent.

Grant Burge Wines is one of the Barossa’s great names, rooted in five generations of Burge family growers and a deep understanding of South Australia’s most famous wine region. The family’s story in the Barossa stretches back to the 1800s, and today the estate is known for generous, expressive wines that capture the richness, warmth and character of the valley. Nebu sits within the Grant Burge Icons range, taking the classic Australian Cabernet Shiraz blend and giving it top-tier treatment: powerful, structured, dark-fruited and built for long ageing.

96 points Decanter Magazine "Choosing Cabernet to drive this top-tier blend (short for Nebuchadnezzar) brings lovely grace and lusciousness to the palate, and showing off the character of the cooler 2017 vintage underlines this finesse and elegance. Long silken threads stream all through the palate, guided by soft tannins to a rich, harmonious finish."

Grant Burge Wines is one of the great Barossa names, rooted in five generations of Burge family viticulture and a deep understanding of South Australia’s most famous wine region. The family’s Barossa story stretches back to 1865, and the Grant Burge name has become synonymous with generous, expressive wines that capture the richness, warmth and character of the valley.

At the heart of the estate is a devotion to classic Barossa reds, especially Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, made with depth, polish and a clear sense of place. Filsell is one of the key vineyard names in the portfolio, planted in 1920 near Lyndoch and long prized for fruit of intensity, concentration and longevity. It also contributes to Meshach, the estate’s flagship Shiraz, which gives Filsell its reputation as the younger brother to one of Barossa’s great icons.

What makes Grant Burge so compelling is the balance between heritage and generosity. These are unmistakably Barossa wines: plush, dark-fruited, richly textured and built for pleasure, but with enough structure and winemaking precision to age with confidence. From mature Cabernet to old-vine Shiraz, Grant Burge delivers the kind of Barossa character that feels both proudly traditional and deeply satisfying.

Harvested from selected old-vine vineyards, small batches of fruit are fermented separately with minimal intervention to capture the unique qualities of each variety. Cool, wet conditions during December, January and February with warmer conditions to follow resulted in a very late vintage. Extended hang time on the vine with increased canopy density due to the wet spring and summer allowed the fruit to attain excellent flavour ripeness while maintaining good levels of natural acidity
