2023 Chenin Blanc, El Enemigo

Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

Mountain Silk

Pure, textured and wonderfully distinctive, this high-altitude Chenin opens with golden apple, ripe pear and quince, layered with cooked lemon, white flowers, juniper and a subtle sea-breeze freshness. Delicate notes of lanolin, dried herbs and crushed stone add complexity without obscuring the clarity of the fruit.

The palate is rounded and quietly generous, with ripe orchard fruit balanced by vibrant acidity and a firm mineral backbone. Fermentation in concrete preserves remarkable purity, while the wine’s natural texture brings weight and presence without any need for oak. Dry, energetic and beautifully composed, it finishes long, tangy and saline.

For when: You want the texture of a serious white Burgundy with a brighter, more adventurous edge.

Pairs with: Roast chicken, grilled sea bass, scallops, pork belly, mushroom risotto or mature Comté.

The grapes come from Los Árboles in Tunuyán, within Mendoza’s Uco Valley. The vineyard sits at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level, where cool nights preserve Chenin Blanc’s natural acidity. Mature vines planted on clay soils give the wine its combination of ripe fruit, fine texture and distinctive mineral drive.

El Enemigo was founded by historian Adrianna Catena and winemaker Alejandro Vigil, two of the most influential figures in contemporary Argentine wine. Created as an independent project, the estate combines Argentina’s youthful energy with a deep respect for traditional European winemaking and the historic vineyards of Mendoza.

The name means “the enemy” and refers to the internal battles that shape and define us. That thoughtful philosophy runs throughout the wines, which are expressive, individual and deliberately free from convention. While El Enemigo has become particularly renowned for Cabernet Franc, its white wines reveal an equally compelling side of Mendoza.

Vineyards are planted across high-altitude sites in the Uco Valley and surrounding areas, where intense sunlight, cool nights and complex soils create wines with concentration, freshness and precise regional character. Alejandro Vigil favours native yeasts, concrete vessels and restrained cellar work, allowing variety and vineyard to remain at the centre of each wine.

The 2023 Chenin Blanc was produced from 100% Chenin grown in Los Árboles, Tunuyán, at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level. Spring frosts reduced yields across Mendoza, while the dry and relatively warm growing season brought harvest forward by two to four weeks. The resulting fruit combined concentration with high natural acidity and comparatively low alcohol.

Fermentation took place with wild yeasts in concrete vats for approximately 40 days, with temperatures kept below 18°C. The wine was matured entirely without oak and bottled unfiltered, preserving its natural texture, aromatic clarity and pronounced mineral character.
