2023 Cabernet Sauvignon 'R Collection', Raymond Vineyards

Napa Valley, California, United States

Generous, smooth and immediately inviting, this California Cabernet opens with black cherry, blackberry and ripe red fruit, layered with clove, cocoa, vanilla and a gentle savoury note. The aroma of warm blackberry pie gives the wine an irresistible richness, while a subtle herbal lift keeps everything feeling fresh.

Medium-bodied and rounded on the palate, with baked plum, blackcurrant, elderberry and rhubarb carried by bright acidity and soft, polished tannins. The oak sits quietly beneath the fruit, adding warmth and spice without becoming heavy. Approachable, satisfying and effortlessly drinkable, it finishes long, smooth and full of ripe berry flavour.

For when: The burgers are on the grill and nobody wants the evening to end.

Pairs with: Steak, cheeseburgers, barbecued ribs, roast lamb, smoky aubergine or mature Cheddar.

The R Collection brings together fruit from selected vineyards across California, with each site contributing a different element to the final wine. Gravelly, free-draining soils and California’s long, sunny growing season encourage generous fruit, while cool nights help retain freshness and aromatic lift.

Raymond Vineyards, founded in 1970, is one of the Napa Valley’s pioneering estates. The Raymond family arrived in Napa in 1933 and have become deeply connected to the valley’s winemaking origins. In 1970, they established a 36-hectare estate in Rutherford, which now comprises 121 hectares in Rutherford, St. Helena and Jameson Canyon. Raymond’s Rutherford and St. Helena estate vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, and 100% of the winery’s power comes from renewable solar energy. Five generations of the Raymond family have created a Napa icon, with an enduring reputation for elegant wines with a beautiful balance of finesse, opulence and complexity.

The 2023 wine is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by small proportions of Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and other complementary varieties. The different vineyard components were vinified separately in stainless steel tanks using a combination of native and selected yeasts.

Pump-overs were kept deliberately gentle to extract colour and flavour without drawing out excessive tannin. The wine was matured for approximately six months with minimal French oak influence, adding subtle notes of vanilla, cocoa and spice while preserving its fresh, fruit-led character.
