2022 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Xanadu

Margaret River, Australia

Ink & Granite

Deep, concentrated and impressively composed, this flagship Margaret River Cabernet opens with cassis, ripe mulberry and blueberry, layered with violet, cedar, graphite and a subtle lift of bay leaf. Hints of dark chocolate, tobacco and pink peppercorn add savoury complexity without distracting from the wine’s beautifully pure fruit.

The palate is full-bodied and commanding, with a dense core of blackberry and blackcurrant held firmly by fine, structured tannins and vibrant acidity. Malbec brings perfume and generosity, while Petit Verdot contributes colour, spice and grip. Powerful without feeling heavy, it finishes long and mineral, with dark fruit, polished oak and a cool seam of coastal freshness. Delicious with food now, but built to develop over several decades.

For when: The main course deserves a Cabernet with genuine authority.

Pairs with: Beef Wellington, ribeye steak, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, venison, mushroom pithivier or mature hard cheeses.

The 2022 Reserve is drawn from three mature Margaret River vineyards across Treeton, Wilyabrup and Wallcliffe, all planted more than 20 years ago. Relatively low yields and an outstanding growing season produced fruit with exceptional intensity, purity and structure. Only wines considered to represent the finest expression of the vintage are selected for Xanadu’s Reserve label.

Xanadu was established by Dr John Lagan in 1977, making it one of the pioneering estates of Margaret River. Its original vineyard was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon, followed by Chardonnay and other Bordeaux varieties as the remarkable potential of the region became increasingly clear. The estate has been owned by the Rathbone family since 2005.

Senior winemaker Glenn Goodall joined Xanadu in 1999 and has played a defining role in establishing its modern reputation. His approach begins in the vineyard, with careful fruit selection and restrained winemaking designed to preserve Margaret River’s purity, natural freshness and maritime character. Under his leadership, Xanadu has become one of the region’s benchmark producers, particularly for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

The vineyards benefit from Margaret River’s coastal climate and ancient, free-draining gravelly soils. Xanadu has been certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia since 2011, with ongoing work focused on soil health, water management, biodiversity and reducing the environmental impact of both vineyard and winery operations.

The 2022 Reserve is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. The Houghton-clone Cabernet was selected from three vineyards across Margaret River, each more than 20 years old. Harvest took place between 18 March and 2 April, following a season of relatively low yields and excellent fruit concentration.

Fermentation took place in a combination of static and open fermenters for five to seven days at 25°C. The cap was managed through aerative pump-overs and regular hand plunging, building colour, flavour and tannin while retaining freshness. Malolactic fermentation was co-inoculated during the primary fermentation.

The wine matured for 14 months in French oak barriques, with 40% new and 60% seasoned oak. The result combines powerful dark fruit and firm structure with the polish, balance and longevity expected of Xanadu’s flagship Reserve Cabernet.
