2020 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, Carpineto

Tuscany, Italy

Noble Pursuit

Fragrant and richly savoury, Carpineto’s Vino Nobile brings together ripe woodland berries and the gently earthy complexity of a patient Tuscan Riserva. Blackberry, cherry and plum unfold alongside violet and lavender, with tobacco, leather and a dusting of sweet spice adding depth. As the wine opens, hints of espresso, woodland floor and pepper emerge, giving the generous fruit a darker, more autumnal character.

The palate is rounded and supple on entry, building through layers of berry fruit towards a firm framework of fine, dusty tannins. Fresh acidity brings lift and definition, while a touch of citrus peel brightens the long, spicy finish. There is substance beneath the polished texture, making this a rewarding wine for slow-cooked dishes and unhurried dinners. Already developing attractive savoury detail, it also has the structure for further ageing, offering plenty to enjoy now and more to discover with time.

For when: The ragù has been simmering all afternoon and dinner deserves your full attention.

Pairs with: Pappardelle with wild boar ragù, rosemary-roasted lamb shoulder, venison casserole with juniper, bistecca alla fiorentina, porcini and chestnut pie or aged Pecorino Toscano.

Vino Nobile takes its name from the hilltop town of Montepulciano, where Sangiovese is traditionally known as Prugnolo Gentile. Carpineto’s approach places particular emphasis on patience, maturing the wine in oak before further bottle ageing and releasing its Riserva later than the appellation requires. That measured approach allows the fruit, tannins and savoury complexity to come together before the wine reaches the table.

Carpineto was founded in 1967 in Dudda, near Greve in Chianti, by Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo. Their ambition was to produce Tuscan wines of greater consistency, depth and longevity, combining respect for Sangiovese with a progressive approach to winemaking. The Sacchet and Zaccheo families continue to run the business, which now encompasses five estates across Tuscany.

The Montepulciano estate lies among rolling hills at approximately 300 metres above sea level, with vineyards and olive groves forming a varied agricultural landscape. Its blue-clay soils are particularly important to the structure of the estate’s Vino Nobile, while densely planted, dry-farmed vineyards encourage careful control of yields. The property also includes protected areas for wildlife and native vegetation.

Winemaking is led by Caterina Sacchet, continuing the work begun by her father. Sustainable vineyard management, solar energy and precise cellar techniques support a philosophy built around flavour, balance and longevity. Extended maturation remains central to the range, giving the wines time to develop texture and complexity before release.

The wine is based on Sangiovese, locally called Prugnolo Gentile, alongside Canaiolo and other permitted varieties. Fruit comes from Carpineto’s Montepulciano estate, where hillside vineyards and clay-rich soils provide the foundation for its structured Riserva style.

Fermentation and skin maceration lasted between 10 and 15 days, with temperatures maintained at 25 to 30°C.

Maturation took place over two years in a combination of large oval Slavonian oak casks and 225-litre French oak barrels. The wine then received at least six months of bottle ageing under controlled temperature and humidity before release, allowing its fruit, oak and tannins to integrate.

Alcohol: 14%. Residual sugar: 2.4 g/L. Recommended drinking window: 2026 to 2040.
