2021 'Cover Drive' Cabernet Sauvignon, Jim Barry

Clare Valley and Coonawarra, Australia

Straight Through the Covers

A Cabernet with classic Clare structure and effortless poise. The nose opens with cassis, boysenberry and fresh tobacco leaf, lifted by subtle spice. On the palate, it glides in with a silky entry, unfolding into ripe dark berries, hints of bramble and savoury tobacco. The tannins are super fine and detailed, giving shape and elegance, while the finish carries impressive line and length. Refined, expressive Cabernet with real precision.

For when: you want a red that’s polished but quietly powerful.
Pairs with: roast lamb, grilled ribeye, or mushroom and thyme dishes.
If this wine were a moment: a perfectly timed cover drive, smooth, confident and beautifully placed.

Certain names resonate strongly within Australian wine history, and Jim Barry is one of them. Widely regarded as a pioneer of the Clare Valley, Jim Barry was the region’s first qualified winemaker, graduating from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. In 1959, he founded Jim Barry Wines, helping establish Clare Valley as one of Australia’s most respected wine regions.

Today the winery remains family owned, with three generations involved. Jim’s son Peter became managing director in 1985, and the next generation, Tom, Sam and Olivia Barry, continue the legacy as winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador. Known for precision, regional character and consistency, Jim Barry Wines was named Winery of the Year in the 2020 Halliday Wine Companion Awards, cementing its place among Australia’s most respected producers.
