Les Grands Assemblages 40YO Armagnac, Darroze (Gift Box)

Bas-Armagnac, Gascony, France

Four Decades Deep

Expansive and deeply mellow, Darroze’s forty-year-old Bas-Armagnac opens with honeyed figs and dried apricot, enriched by toasted almonds, walnuts, and toffee. Orange peel brings brightness to the darker aromas, while leather, nutmeg and cinnamon reveal the complexity of prolonged oak ageing. It is a wonderfully absorbing bouquet, offering detail gradually, with the fruit still clearly present beneath its mature, savoury layers.

Silken on entry, the palate builds through dried fruit and caramel before revealing dark chocolate, fragrant wood and a delicate black-tea grip. The initial impression of sweetness gives way to a drier, more structured finish, with remarkable persistence and a gentle citrus lift. This is an Armagnac for unhurried appreciation, combining the depth of four decades in cask with enough freshness to keep each sip expressive. Fully mature and ready to enjoy, it makes a particularly memorable gift for an experienced spirits drinker.

For when: Forty years of stories deserve an evening of their own.

Pairs with: Dark chocolate and walnut tart, caramelised fig tarte Tatin, almond financiers, coffee parfait, prune and hazelnut cake or aged Gouda.

Les Grands Assemblages brings together different origins and harvest years to explore Armagnac at successive stages of maturity. At forty years, the relationship between spirit and oak becomes especially important: carefully chosen barrels must provide complexity while preserving finesse. The age statement refers to the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend, and the gift-box presentation makes this a fitting bottle for a significant milestone.

Darroze grew from a family passion for the food and drink of Gascony. At his father Jean’s restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, Francis Darroze discovered the region’s distinctive eaux-de-vie. From the late 1960s, he began visiting small estates across Bas-Armagnac, selecting spirits to mature and bottle under the family name.
The house now works with around thirty estates, drawing on the variety of Bas-Armagnac’s vineyards and sandy soils. The region’s characteristic tawny sands and Atlantic-influenced climate contribute to its reputation for aromatic finesse. Cellars in Roquefort and Labastide-d’Armagnac provide the setting for the patient maturation of these individual spirits.
Marc Darroze continues the family’s work, overseeing selection, ageing and blending. Understanding the development of each eau-de-vie is fundamental, particularly when maturation extends across several decades. Les Grands Assemblages draws on that experience to unite complementary characters in balanced, age-stated blends.

Darroze lists Baco and Ugni Blanc for its forty-year-old assemblage. Eaux-de-vie from different origins and harvest years are selected for their complementary qualities, with every component aged for at least forty years.
Maturation begins in new oak before the spirits are transferred to older barrels, allowing development to continue with more restrained wood extraction. Cool, humid cellar conditions encourage gradual evaporation and the slow integration of alcohol, tannin and flavour.
The mature components are blended to balance concentration, aromatic complexity and finesse. Bottled at 43%, the finished Armagnac retains sufficient presence to carry its developed flavours through a lengthy finish. It is presented in a boxed 70cl bottle.
Alcohol: 43%. Bottle size: 70cl. Minimum age: 40 years. Vegan.
