Les Grands Assemblages 20YO Armagnac, Darroze (Gift Box)

Bas-Armagnac, Gascony, France

Fig & Velvet

Sumptuous and assured, Darroze’s twenty-year-old Armagnac opens with dried figs, raisins and rich caramel, lifted by orange zest and the darker fruitiness of prunes. Oak is woven into the aromas, bringing gentle baking spice and depth without obscuring the fruit. There is a lovely sense of development here, with each swirl revealing another detail in its mellow, autumnal character.

Across the palate, the texture is velvety and generous, supported by fine tannins and a warmth that feels beautifully integrated. Apple and sultana notes give way to dark chocolate and lingering spice, creating a long, satisfying finish. Two decades of maturation have brought composure while preserving plenty of vitality, making this an especially rewarding bottle for anyone seeking mature Armagnac with both richness and definition. Ready to savour now, it is particularly appealing served neat after dinner.

For when: The anniversary deserves something with a little history of its own.

Pairs with: Fig and walnut tart, dark chocolate fondant, baked apples with raisins, pecan pie, prune clafoutis or aged Comté.

Les Grands Assemblages explores how Armagnac changes with time, combining different origins and harvest years at each age level. The twenty-year-old occupies a particularly attractive stage, when the spirit’s warmth has softened, its tannins have become finer, and its flavours have gained depth. The age statement refers to the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend, with the gift-box presentation making this a considered choice for a milestone celebration.

Darroze’s connection to Armagnac grew from the gastronomic traditions of the family restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan. Inspired by his father Jean, Francis Darroze began exploring the cellars of Bas-Armagnac in the late 1960s, selecting distinctive eaux-de-vie to mature and bottle. His enthusiasm for individual estates and their particular characters established the foundations of the house.
Today, Darroze works with around thirty estates, drawing on the diversity of Bas-Armagnac’s vineyards. The region’s sandy soils, including its characteristic tawny sands, favour the aromatic finesse associated with its spirits. Maturation takes place in cellars at Roquefort and Labastide-d’Armagnac, where the family oversees the development of its extensive collection.
Marc Darroze continues this work through careful selection, patient ageing and precise blending. Understanding how each spirit responds to wood and cellar conditions is central to the house’s approach. Alongside its individual estate bottlings, Les Grands Assemblages demonstrates how complementary eaux-de-vie can create a complete, harmonious picture of maturity.

The twenty-year-old is a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc Armagnacs, selected from different origins and years. Its youngest component has matured for at least twenty years, with the assemblage designed to combine developed flavours with enduring energy.
Oak ageing gradually refines the tannins and softens the impression of alcohol, while building aromatic complexity. Darroze pays close attention to barrel selection, aeration and cellar conditions, recognising that each influences the pace and character of maturation.
The selected eaux-de-vie are blended to achieve a balance of fruit, structure and mature complexity. Bottling at 43% preserves a satisfying presence on the palate, and the 70cl bottle is supplied in a Darroze gift box.
Alcohol: 43%. Bottle size: 70cl. Minimum age: 20 years.
