Les Grands Assemblages 12YO Armagnac, Darroze (Gift Box)

Bas-Armagnac, Gascony, France

The Spice Cabinet

Characterful and warmly aromatic, Darroze’s twelve-year-old Armagnac brings together fragrant fruit, cinnamon and liquorice, with vanilla and a delicate floral lift adding depth. Dried-fruit notes become more expressive as it opens, while gentle oak and a touch of clove introduce the complexity of longer maturation. Give it a few minutes in the glass, and the aromas broaden, revealing an inviting interplay of fruit, wood and spice.

The palate has substance and an energetic warmth, with vanilla lending softness to a firmer, lightly drying structure. Hints of coffee and caramelised sugar deepen the flavours, before a fragrant finish carries the spice forward. There is plenty here to interest an established Armagnac drinker, while its accessible balance makes it a thoughtful gift for someone exploring beyond Cognac. Enjoy it now, preferably neat and unhurried, to appreciate how it develops in the glass.

For when: The evening calls for a comfortable chair and an album played from beginning to end.

Pairs with: Crème brûlée, cinnamon apple tart, coffee and walnut cake, dark chocolate mousse, caramelised pear tarte Tatin or hazelnut praline chocolates.

Les Grands Assemblages charts Armagnac’s development through a sequence of age-stated blends. The twelve-year-old captures the point where fruit remains prominent while oak ageing introduces a more pronounced spice character. Its age refers to the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend, with different years and origins selected to create a consistent house style. Presented in a Darroze gift box, it offers an engaging introduction to this stage of Armagnac’s evolution.

Darroze grew from a family passion for Gascon food and drink. At his father Jean’s restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan, Francis Darroze developed the curiosity that would take him through the region’s vineyards and farm cellars. From the late 1960s, he began selecting, maturing and bottling distinctive Armagnacs, laying the foundations of a house closely connected to the people and traditions of south-west France.
The family’s work centres on Bas-Armagnac, where sandy soils and the characteristic tawny sands contribute to the region’s reputation for aromatic finesse. Darroze draws on a network of around thirty estates, with cellars in Roquefort and Labastide-d’Armagnac. This diversity provides a wide range of individual characters for both estate bottlings and carefully composed blends.
Marc Darroze now leads the house, continuing his father’s emphasis on selection and attentive maturation. Barrel choice, cellar conditions and regular assessment guide each eau-de-vie’s development. Les Grands Assemblages brings that experience into focus, using complementary spirits to explore the flavours and textures associated with different ages.

The twelve-year-old assemblage is made from Ugni Blanc and Baco, combining Armagnacs of different origins and harvest years. Each component is selected for its contribution to the finished blend, with the youngest eau-de-vie having matured for at least twelve years.
Ageing takes place in oak, allowing the fruit character to develop alongside notes of vanilla, liquorice and cinnamon. Darroze’s maturation approach considers both the influence of the barrel and the conditions within the cellar, shaping the relationship between aromatic development, alcohol and tannin.
The components are blended to preserve fruit expression while delivering the additional complexity of maturity. Bottled at 43%, the finished Armagnac retains a spirited character and benefits from a little time to breathe before drinking.
