2024 Killka Malbec, Bodegas Salentein

Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

Andes After Dark

Bright, generous Malbec from the high vineyards of the Uco Valley. The nose bursts with ripe blackberry and black cherry, layered with hints of cocoa, vanilla and a flicker of spice. On the palate, it’s juicy and full-bodied, with plush dark fruit wrapped in soft tannins and a fresh lift from its mountain altitude. Smooth, vibrant and beautifully balanced, it finishes with gentle chocolatey richness and a touch of freshness.

For when: steak night or anything cooked over fire.
Pairs with: grilled ribeye, smoky barbecue or roasted vegetables.
If this wine were a place: a sun-dipped vineyard beneath the Andes.

Founded in 1996 by Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon, Bodegas Salentein helped transform the Uco Valley into one of Argentina’s most exciting fine wine regions. Set against the dramatic Andes Mountains, the estate’s vineyards sit between 1,050 and 1,600 metres above sea level, where intense sunlight and cool nights create wines with both richness and freshness.

The estate’s iconic cross shaped gravity fed winery allows each parcel to be vinified separately, preserving the character of the site. With a philosophy centred on expressing the purity of high altitude terroir, Salentein has become one of Argentina’s most admired producers and was recently ranked 12th in the World’s Best Vineyards Awards 2025.

Bodegas Salentein is nestled in the picturesque Uco Valley just south of Mendoza. In 1996, Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon purchased the estate in what initially seemed to be a rocky desert. He ambitiously embarked on planting vineyards at high altitudes with the aim of producing ‘wines like no other.’ A year later, construction of the magnificent cross-shaped winery began. The four wings of the landmark winery each ferment the wines before gravity transfers it to the underground cellars. The high-altitude vines are planted at an elevation of between 1,050 and 1,600 metres, against the breathtaking backdrop of the Andes Mountains. At this altitude, the vines benefit from optimal diurnal temperature differences and a diverse terroir in which they flourish. Today, Bodegas Salentein is one of the most admired Argentine wineries - not just in the Uco Valley, but in the world. Their focus is on producing terroir-driven wines which express the essence of the Uco Valley, and they do so with great purity and finesse. Recently, Bodegas Salentein was awarded 12th place in the Top 100 of the World's Best Vineyards Awards 2025.

The grapes were harvested using state-of-the-art machinery and destemmed in the vineyard, ensuring only the best berries arrived at the winery. The berries were transferred to tanks for cold maceration. During fermentation, remontage took place four times daily. Post-fermentation maceration on the marc followed, with continuous tasting to monitor development. After racking, the wine underwent malolactic conversion, followed by ageing with French and American oak staves for eight months.
