2024 Great Southern Chardonnay, Three Lions by Plantagenet

Mount Barker, Great Southern,

Golden Roar

White peach, nectarine and lemon blossom rise from the glass, joined by citrus leaf, nougat and a delicate touch of toast. Bright and inviting, it combines generous Great Southern fruit with the cool-climate freshness that keeps every mouthful lively.

The palate is creamy yet precise, with crunchy stone fruit, fresh citrus and a fine mineral drive. Partial barrel fermentation brings texture and subtle savoury complexity without overwhelming the fruit, while vibrant acidity carries everything towards a clean, gently toasted finish.

For when: The roast chicken comes out golden, and lunch deserves something brighter.

Pairs with: Roast chicken, grilled prawns, crab linguine, baked salmon, creamy mushroom pasta or cauliflower cheese.

Fruit comes from four mature estate vineyards across Great Southern: Crystal Brook, Wyjup, Bouverie and Rosetta. The region’s cool climate and gravelly soils give Chardonnay a particularly appealing balance of ripe fruit, natural freshness and mineral definition.

Three Lions is the accessible, estate-grown range from Plantagenet, one of the pioneering names of Western Australia’s Great Southern. Based at Mount Barker, Plantagenet owns 126 hectares of vineyards across the region, allowing the winemaking team to follow every stage from vineyard to bottle.

The range takes its name from the three lions associated with the royal arms of the Plantagenet dynasty. It was created to offer a welcoming introduction to the estate while retaining the regional character, careful fruit selection and winemaking standards found throughout the wider Plantagenet portfolio.

Great Southern’s cool climate, clean air and ancient gravelly loam soils are especially well suited to Chardonnay. Long, measured ripening preserves acidity while developing ripe stone-fruit flavours, giving the wines generosity without excessive weight. The vineyards are sustainably farmed, and the fruit for Three Lions comes entirely from established estate sites.

This Chardonnay captures the range particularly well. It is expressive and immediately enjoyable, but careful use of oak, lees and blending gives it enough texture and detail to rise above simple everyday Chardonnay.

The 2024 Three Lions Chardonnay was made with estate-grown fruit from the Crystal Brook, Wyjup, Bouverie and Rosetta vineyards in Great Southern. The mature vines range from approximately 20 to 50 years old and grow in sandy, gravelly and gravel-loam soils over clay.

The 2024 growing season began unusually early following warm conditions during September and October. Isolated frost and periods of extreme heat reduced yields in some areas, but early harvesting helped preserve the grapes’ natural acidity and aromatic freshness.

The grapes were harvested at night, chilled and gently pressed. After settling, some parcels were fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and pure fruit, while others were transferred directly to French oak barriques for greater texture and savoury complexity. Fermentation took place with selected yeasts at temperatures between 15 and 25°C.

The wine remained on its lees for several months, with regular bâtonnage adding creaminess and depth. Malolactic fermentation was not encouraged, helping retain the wine’s bright acidity. The individual parcels were then blended to balance vibrant stone fruit, mineral drive and subtle oak.

Alcohol: 13.5%. Total acidity: 6.3g/L. pH: 3.36.
