2024 Côtes du Rhône Rouge 'Parallèle 45', Paul Jaboulet Aîné

Côtes du Rhône, Rhone Valley, France

Ripe raspberry, strawberry and cherry lead the aroma, joined by violet, peony, Mediterranean herbs and warm spice. There is a subtle darker note of black olive underneath, giving the wine a distinctly Rhône character while keeping the fruit bright and inviting.

Juicy and supple on the palate, with Grenache bringing generous red fruit and Syrah adding pepper, colour and structure. Fine tannins and lively freshness keep everything beautifully balanced, carrying raspberry, herbs and spice into a smooth, satisfying finish. An approachable organic Rhône red with genuine pedigree and remarkable everyday drinkability.

For when: A relaxed supper needs a red that everyone will enjoy.

Pairs with: Herb-roasted lamb, Toulouse sausages, grilled pork, ratatouille, charcuterie, mushroom casserole or smoky aubergine.

Parallèle 45 takes its name from the line of latitude that passes just south of Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s cellars in Tain-l’Hermitage. First created in 1950, it is recognised as the oldest Côtes du Rhône label still in production, offering an accessible introduction to one of the Rhône Valley’s most historic houses.

Paul Jaboulet Aîné was founded by Antoine Jaboulet in Tain-l’Hermitage in 1834. From its beginnings on the hill of Hermitage, the house developed holdings across the northern Rhône and built an international reputation through wines such as the legendary Hermitage La Chapelle.

The Frey family acquired Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 2006, placing winemaker and viticulturist Caroline Frey at its head. Her arrival brought extensive investment in both vineyards and cellar, including the construction of a gravity-fed winery in 2010. The estate achieved organic certification in 2016 and has continued exploring biodynamic and regenerative methods designed to improve soil life, biodiversity and resilience.

Today, the house works across some of the Rhône Valley’s most important appellations, including Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. Its wines combine the authority and experience of a historic producer with a fresher, increasingly precise approach to farming and winemaking. Parallèle 45 remains one of its most recognisable bottles, delivering authentic Rhône character, careful organic viticulture and dependable quality at an accessible level.

The 2024 Parallèle 45 Rouge combines 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 5% Carignan and 5% Mourvèdre. The organically farmed vines average around 40 years old and grow across clay-limestone soils and alluvial deposits containing the rounded stones associated with the Rhône Valley.

The grapes were destemmed and crushed before temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine matured for six months on its fine lees in stainless-steel and truncated-cone vats, preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit without adding overt oak flavour.

The 2024 growing season began with an exceptionally mild, dry winter, followed by substantial spring rainfall. A cool and humid May slowed the early development of the vines, while summer warmth allowed the grapes to ripen evenly without significant water stress. The resulting wine combines ripe fruit with freshness, fine tannins and a gently spicy finish.

Certified organic. Alcohol: 14.5%. Best enjoyed now or over the next two to three years, served lightly cool at approximately 12°C.
