2023 Chardonnay, Hartenberg Wine Estate
Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa
Bottelary Gold
Bright, poised and quietly luxurious, this Chardonnay opens with fresh citrus, ripe pear and apricot, layered with subtle toast and a cool mineral note. The palate brings together zesty lemon and lime with crisp acidity, gentle creaminess and beautifully restrained French oak. It feels rounded without becoming heavy, finishing clean, refreshing and elegantly composed.
There is enough richness here to satisfy lovers of barrel-aged Chardonnay, but the wine’s freshness remains firmly in control. Refined, versatile and exceptionally easy to return to, it shows why Chardonnay has become Hartenberg’s white-wine star.
For when: The roast chicken is ready and the evening has nowhere else to be.
Pairs with: Smoked chicken, duck in a creamy sauce, seared tuna, grilled prawns, mushroom risotto or a goat’s cheese tart.
Hartenberg may be best known for its world-class Shiraz, but the estate has developed an equally impressive reputation for Chardonnay. Its vineyards sit in a secluded valley on the north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills, where varied aspects and elevations help preserve freshness while building flavour and texture.
