2022 Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Agrelo, El Enemigo

Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina

En-Primeur offer: wines arrive in November 2026

This is Cabernet Franc with serious Mendoza muscle. Dark cherry, elderberry and black plum lead the nose, layered with violet, green peppercorn, graphite, tobacco leaf and a savoury lick of smoke. It feels bold and modern, but not overdone; the fruit is deep, the aromatics are lifted, and the whole thing hums with high-altitude energy.

On the palate, it is intense, firm and beautifully driven, with grippy tannins framing the black fruit and carrying it into a long, focused finish. The Malbec adds depth and flesh, while Cabernet Franc gives freshness, structure and that distinctive herbal snap. A superb bottle for lovers of serious Bordeaux-style reds who want more altitude, more polish and a clear sense of Argentine place.

For when
A special steak night deserves a serious bottle.

Pairs with
Chargrilled ribeye, slow-braised short rib, lamb shoulder with rosemary, venison, black garlic mushrooms, smoky aubergine, lentil ragù or aged hard cheeses.

Gran Enemigo Agrelo sits within El Enemigo’s top single-vineyard Cabernet Franc collection, a range built to show how different Mendoza sites shape the variety. Agrelo brings warmth, power and plushness, but at 930m altitude, it also keeps freshness and direction. The result is a wine with real authority: dark, structured, polished and built for the cellar, yet already compelling if opened with generous food and a little air.

El Enemigo is one of Argentina’s most admired modern wine projects, founded by Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil. Adrianna brings a historian’s eye and deep connection to Mendoza’s wine culture, while Alejandro Vigil is one of the country’s most influential winemakers, known for his work with high-altitude vineyards, precision farming and the rise of Cabernet Franc as a serious Argentine fine-wine variety.

The name El Enemigo is about the inner battle: the pursuit of something more meaningful, more expressive and more difficult. That idea runs through the wines. Rather than relying only on Mendoza’s natural ripeness, El Enemigo seeks tension, freshness, structure and vineyard character.

Gran Enemigo is the estate’s most ambitious red-wine tier, focused on Cabernet Franc-led wines from distinct Mendoza sites including Gualtallary, Chacayes, El Cepillo and Agrelo. These are polished, age-worthy wines with international stature, but they remain unmistakably Argentine: vibrant, savoury, mountain-shaped and full of personality.

The 2022 Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Agrelo is a blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec from Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. The vineyard sits at around 930m above sea level, giving the wine its balance of ripeness, structure and freshness.

The fruit was cold macerated for five days before fermentation in barrel at an average temperature of 22°C. Ageing took place in French oak barrels of second and third use, with seven months in foudres. Alcohol is listed at 13.9%.

The 2022 Mendoza vintage was widely regarded as strong, with excellent natural acidity, good concentration, ripe tannin development and alcohol levels that stayed in balance. That vintage profile suits this wine especially well: it has the depth and grip expected from Agrelo, but also the energy and precision that define the best Gran Enemigo releases.
