2022 Chenin Blanc, Van Wyk Family Wines

Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa

Granite Tide

Bright, textured and beautifully poised, this Stellenbosch Chenin opens with yellow apple, ripe pear and white peach, layered with quince, citrus peel and a subtle waxy richness. The palate is generous without feeling heavy, its ripe yellow fruit lifted by vibrant acidity and a distinct stony, saline character.

Seven months on the gross lees gives the wine a rounded, gently creamy texture, while old French oak adds breadth without leaving an obvious woody flavour. Freshness runs throughout, carrying the fruit towards a long, savoury and quietly complex finish.

For when: A simple supper deserves a white with a little more thought behind it.

Pairs with: Roast chicken, grilled sea bass, seafood risotto, pork belly, creamy vegetable dishes or mild Cape Malay curry.

Sourced from Chenin Blanc vines planted on Stellenbosch’s granitic soils, this wine combines natural concentration with impressive freshness and saline precision. It is a thoughtful, food-friendly expression of one of South Africa’s most important white varieties.

Van Wyk Family Wines is the personal project of South African winemaker Justin van Wyk. Made at Constantia Glen, the wines draw upon specially selected vineyards across the greater Western Cape, allowing Justin to work with varieties and sites that possess their own distinctive character.

The range is united by freshness, texture and restraint. Oak and lees ageing are used to shape the wines rather than dominate them, keeping the fruit and vineyard character firmly at the centre. This Stellenbosch Chenin is a particularly clear example, bringing together ripe fruit, granitic freshness and an elegant, savoury finish.

The 2022 Chenin Blanc was produced from grapes grown on granitic soils in Stellenbosch. Following fermentation, the wine was matured for seven months in old French oak barrels on its gross lees before bottling.

The extended lees contact builds texture and complexity through the middle of the palate, while the seasoned barrels allow the wine to develop without introducing overt oak flavours. The result is an elegant Chenin Blanc with bright yellow fruit, freshness and a long saline finish.
