2022 Barossa Shiraz, Heirloom Vineyards

Barossa Valley, Australia

Deep, generous and beautifully assured, this Barossa Shiraz opens with ripe blackberry, black plum and blueberry, layered with notes of dark chocolate, liquorice and warm baking spice. The palate is plush and mouth-filling, delivering classic Barossa richness wrapped in fine, velvety tannins and balanced by a savoury freshness that keeps everything composed. There’s depth and warmth here without excess, finishing long, smooth and quietly confident.

For when: you want a proper Barossa that still knows when to stop.
Pairs with: grilled steak, slow-roasted lamb, rich vegetable dishes, or barbecue favourites.
If this wine were… a well-told family story, generous, grounded, and full of character.

Heirloom Vineyards is a South Australian producer focused on celebrating heritage vineyard sites and old-vine material across the Barossa Valley and beyond. Working with growers whose vineyards have been tended for generations, Heirloom places emphasis on site expression, balance and thoughtful winemaking rather than overt power. Gentle handling in the winery and sensitive oak use allow the fruit to lead, resulting in a Barossa Shiraz that honours tradition while delivering a modern, polished expression of one of Australia’s great regions.

Zar and Elena Brooks, of Dandelion Vineyards fame, founded Heirloom Vineyards in order to make wines from a selection of their best fruit.
“Our aim,” says Zar, “is to preserve the best of tradition (the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards) and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites, embracing the principles of organic and biodynamic farming.”
The Barossa Shiraz is intense and ripe yet nicely defined. The Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir, made with 50% whole bunch, has bright, crunchy red fruit flavours and supple tannins. It offers excellent value. Richard Hemming MW agrees, stating, “I defy anyone to find better-value Pinot Noir than Heirloom in the Adelaide Hills.”

Whole bunches were hand-picked and sorted before undergoing natural fermentation in open-top fermenters. The wine was then gently basket-pressed into a combination of French and American oak barriques for maturation before bottling.
