2016 Basket Press Shiraz, Reynella

McLaren Vale, Australia

Midnight Heritage

Dark, powerful and classically McLaren Vale, this opens with waves of blackberry, black plum and blueberry, layered with liquorice, dark chocolate, cedar and warm spice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with plush dark fruit shaped by fine-grained tannins and a fresh core that keeps everything beautifully composed.

French and American oak contributes notes of vanilla, toast and mocha, while the wine’s depth and structure give it a distinctly traditional character. Rich without becoming heavy and powerful without losing control, it finishes long and savoury with lingering blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate.

For when: A proper roast calls for a mature Shiraz with history, depth and presence.

Pairs with: Ribeye steak, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, barbecued beef, venison, rich winter stews or aged Cheddar.

Made from 40-year-old McLaren Vale vines and pressed using Reynella’s historic basket press, this is a traditional expression of Australian Shiraz. The generous fruit and chocolate richness associated with the region are balanced by firm structure, savoury complexity and the freshness required for graceful ageing.

Reynella stands at the beginning of South Australia’s winemaking story. John Reynell established the property in 1838 and planted some of the region’s earliest vineyards. In 1850, a young Thomas Hardy worked there as an apprentice before founding his own winery three years later.

Hardys acquired Château Reynella in 1982 and restored the historic property, reconnecting the company with the place where Thomas Hardy’s Australian winemaking career began. The estate remains home to South Australia’s oldest operating wine cellar and a century-old basket press that continues to play an important role in its wines.

The Reynella range celebrates traditional McLaren Vale winemaking through old vineyards, open fermentation and gentle basket pressing. The resulting wines are powerful and generous, but built around structure, balance and the ability to develop over many years.

The 2016 Basket Pressed Shiraz was produced from approximately 40-year-old McLaren Vale vines. The grapes were hand-picked and fermented in traditional open fermenters before being pressed through Reynella’s historic basket press, which was 97 years old at the time of the vintage.

The wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak barriques. French oak contributes structure and savoury detail, while American oak complements the ripe Shiraz fruit with notes of vanilla, toast and warm spice.

Alcohol: 14.5%. Recommended drinking window: now to 2041.
