1998 Galatrona, Petrolo
Tuscany, Italy
Galatrona is a Merlot cru from the ten-hectare vineyard Galatrona planted in during the 1990s with low vigour Bordeaux clones. This is Petrolo’s flagship wine, it is extremely aromatic and has great structure.
This 1998 has aromas of dark berry compote and oaky vanillin, these are brightened by suave floral and spice cake notes. The palate is broad and fleshy but energetic, featuring vibrant blackberry and bitter red cherry flavours that gain weight in the glass. Powerful but very well balanced, with a strong finishing tannic kick and strong hints of underbrush and rosemary.

Petrolo remains one of the most talked about Tuscan estates. It is situated in the Colli Aretini, bordering on the Chianti hills, in an historic area delimited in 1716 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III de’ Medici as one of Tuscany’s top four wine producing zones. The Petrolo estate was part of the old medieval fiefdom of ‘Galatrona’, the old tower (‘Torrione’) which still remains on top of Roman foundations. Luca Sanjust runs the estate and the vibrancy and intensity of the fruit that he is getting in his wines has brought them some well deserved attention.
The fruit was handpicked and sorted again once at the winery. Fermentation took place in concrete vats using native yeasts with gentle pump-overs. After an extended period of maceration, the wine was aged in French oak barriques, a third of which were new. Malolactic fermentation occurred spontaneously in barrel with regular bâtonnage of the fine lees for the first six months.
