1978 Colheita Port, Barros, Gift Box

Duoro, Portugal

Amber Treasury

Deeply mellow and richly evocative, this mature Colheita promises the intricate pleasures of long wood-aged Port. Think dried figs, caramelised orange peel and golden raisins, unfolding towards walnut, polished wood and warming spice. Toffee and treacle lend a darker richness, while the citrus character brings lift and definition. It is a style made for slow appreciation, with each return to the glass revealing another delicious detail.

The palate brings together sumptuous sweetness, a silken texture and the savoury complexity that makes old Colheita so compelling. Layers of dried fruit, nuts and caramel are balanced by freshness, carrying the flavours through a lingering, gently spiced finish. Presented in a gift box, this is a thoughtful choice for a significant birthday, an anniversary or someone who appreciates the quiet luxury of mature Port. Ready to enjoy, it offers the pleasure of time already invested.

For when: The plates are cleared, the conversation deepens, and there is no reason to rush.

Pairs with: Serve with walnut tart, sticky toffee pudding, crème brûlée, orange and almond cake, aged Comté or a generous wedge of Stilton.

Colheita means “harvest” in Portuguese and identifies a tawny Port made from a single year’s grapes. Its character develops through extended maturation in wood, where gradual exposure to oxygen transforms youthful fruit into layers of dried citrus, nuts and spice. The 1978 date identifies the harvest, while the bottling date records when that long period in cask came to an end.

Founded in 1913, Barros is a Portuguese Port house particularly associated with wood-aged wines and Colheitas. Its reputation rests on the patient development of wines whose appeal comes from the relationship between fruit, time and careful cellar ageing. These single-harvest releases offer a distinctive way to explore that heritage.

The wines originate in the Douro Valley, where steep vineyard slopes, schist soils and hot summers provide the setting for Portugal’s traditional Port grapes. The intensity developed in the vineyard gives the wines the substance needed for fortification and extended maturation, with freshness playing an essential role in their eventual balance.

For a house specialising in Colheita, the work continues long after harvest. Careful management of wines in wood allows individual years to develop their own character, building aromatic complexity while retaining harmony. Barros’s mature releases celebrate that patient craft, offering an inviting introduction to the depth and variety of fine tawny Port.

Colheita Port is produced exclusively from grapes harvested in the year shown on the label, in this instance 1978. As with other Ports, fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit, retaining natural grape sweetness while raising the wine’s alcoholic strength.

The wine then matures in wood for a minimum of seven years, often considerably longer. During this period, gradual oxidation and concentration develop the amber colour, nutty aromas and layered dried-fruit flavours associated with the style. The balance between sweetness and freshness remains central to the finished wine.

Colheita is bottled after its development in cask and is released ready to drink. It does not require further bottle ageing to reveal its character. Serve lightly chilled in a white wine glass to give its aromas room to unfold.
