This is Swartland Syrah at its most serious, sculpted and electric. Blackberry, wild raspberry and red plum sit beneath incense, thyme, black pepper, liquorice, olive brine and fynbos. It feels dark and intense, but never bulky; the rocky schist soils give it a mineral charge and a sense of wild Cape energy.

On the palate, it is powerful, savoury and tightly wound, with firm tannins, vivid acidity and a long, stony finish. Whole-bunch character brings lift, spice and herbal tension, while the fruit has the concentration of a small crop without tipping into excess. A genuinely world-class South African Syrah for collectors, Rhône lovers and anyone who wants intensity with precision rather than weight.

Porseleinberg is one of South Africa’s defining Syrah projects, grown on a rugged, schist-rich hilltop in the Swartland and closely linked to Boekenhoutskloof’s modern Cape fine-wine story. The site is raw, dry and demanding, but that difficulty is exactly what gives the wine its intensity, structure and unmistakable mineral drive. This is not plush, polished Shiraz; it is Syrah with nerve, tannin, perfume and a profound sense of place.

Porseleinberg is one of the landmark names of modern South African wine. Owned by Boekenhoutskloof and developed as a focused Swartland project, it is based on a remote, rocky hilltop site near Riebeek-Kasteel where Syrah is pushed to produce something raw, mineral and deeply expressive.

The vineyard is defined by hard schist soils, a dry climate and low-yielding vines that have to work for every bit of growth. That struggle shows in the glass: Porseleinberg is known for intensity, tannic structure, savoury complexity and a cool, stony energy that marks it out from richer, more obvious styles of Shiraz.

The project became closely associated with Callie Louw, who farmed and made the wine with a famously hands-on, minimal-intervention approach. Only one wine is produced under the Porseleinberg name, giving it a rare sense of focus. For customers, this is one of the Cape’s true collector bottles: limited, age-worthy, critically acclaimed and utterly distinctive.

The 2023 Porseleinberg is 100% Syrah from organic vineyards in the Swartland, grown on extremely rocky schist soils. The 2023 season was dry and challenging, but cooler than 2022, giving a wine with concentration, balance and a particularly vivid sense of freshness.

Fermentation was dominated by whole bunches, with a smaller portion of crushed fruit. The cellar work combined submerged cap technique with gentle pump-over extraction, building tannic depth while keeping the aromatics lifted and precise. The wine was then matured for 12 months, mainly in large foudre with a small concrete component.

The result is a serious, tightly built Syrah that is still youthful and full of energy. Expect blackberry, red berries, incense, thyme, black pepper, olive, fynbos and a strong stony core, with firm tannins that will reward patience. It is impressive now with air and rich food, but this is really a cellar-worthy bottle that should become more complex, savoury and seamless over the next decade.
