2021 Öküzgözü Shiraz, Kuzubağ
Aegean, Turkey
Anatolian Velvet
Dark, ripe and beautifully inviting, this Turkish red brings together the bright native charm of Öküzgözü with the darker, spicier depth of Shiraz. Aromas of black plum, dark cherry and wild berries rise from the glass, layered with violet, pepper, smooth oak and a cool flicker of mint. The palate is full-bodied and generous, but nicely balanced, with juicy black fruit, polished tannins and a warm, fruit-laden finish that feels smooth, satisfying and just a little exotic.
For when: the grill is glowing and something smoky is on the table.
Pairs with: lamb kebabs, grilled aubergine, spiced meatballs, or slow-cooked beef.
If this wine were a place: a late evening terrace in Anatolia, with charcoal smoke in the air and spice on the breeze.
Kuzubağ was founded in 2007 in Çal, Denizli, with a focus on showcasing Turkey’s distinctive terroir through both native grapes and classic international varieties. This blend captures that idea beautifully, pairing Öküzgözü’s lively red-fruited character with Shiraz’s darker fruit, spice and structure. It also has serious award pedigree, taking Gold at Decanter World Wine Awards 2023 among other international medals.
