2019 La Montesa Crianza, Palacios Remondo
Rioja, Spain
Alvaro Palacios has spent decades pioneering a new order of fine wine across Spain. He has created some of the country’s most iconic wines by championing terroir and native grapes whose potential had been long overlooked and untapped.
Palacios Remondo is his family’s Rioja estate, tucked in the far eastern corner of the Oriental district. The story in this rugged, high-altitude scrubland is about Garnacha—the territory’s traditional variety and also one of Alvaro’s biggest passions. By focusing on elevating Garnacha-driven wines that are expressive of and authentic to this stunning side of Rioja, Alvaro is continuing to reshape the future of Spanish fine wine.
This 2019 La Montesa Crianza is made from Garnacha and a small amount of Tempranillo, it is incredibly well-balanced with velvety red-fruit notes and hints of sweet spice, orange peel and dulcet yellow peaches found both in the nose and on the palate. An exceptional, Mediterranean Garnacha-based wine that excels with every vintage.

“The organic Garnacha 2019 La Montesa fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats and matured in barriques for 12 months…. It has a medium-bodied palate with very fine tannins. The 800,000 kilos of grapes were hand harvested and selected, trying to avoid very ripe grapes to control the degrees of alcohol, with natural acidity, and the wine is lively and pure, with measured oak. The colours in all the reds are bright ruby, not too dark, and the fruit is red rather than black, despite the warmer and drier year. It has the very fine tannins of the Garnacha in limestone soils.”

Palacios Remondo is a family-owned winery based in Alfaro, in Rioja Oriental, the warmest and most easterly part of the Rioja appellation. The soils here are silty and alluvial and the semi-arid Mediterranean climate is well-suited to growing Garnacha, a variety that is finally coming back into the foreground in this region, after decades of being supplanted by the more popular Tempranillo.
After making his name in Priorat and Bierzo, Álvaro Palacios returned to his ancestral home in Rioja and took over the winemaking reigns at Palacios Remondo. Álvaro is one of the high-profile winemakers (along with Telmo Rodriguez) determined to champion Garnacha, particularly from old bush vines. The organically-farmed La Montesa vineyard is testament to what this variety is capable of, in the right hands. Situated on the hillsides of Monte Yerga, this vineyard produces fragrant and aromatically-intense wines, with a lightness that is often Pinot-esque.
