2015 Rioja Tinto, Finca Allende

Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain

The Modern Soul of Rioja.

A Rioja that trades oak opulence for sculpted elegance, the 2015 Finca Allende Tinto captures the essence of Tempranillo with remarkable precision. Aromas of ripe black cherry, plum and violet mingle with graphite, vanilla pod and a touch of warm spice. The palate is supple yet firm with layers of dark fruit and savoury earth framed by fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. There’s richness, but also lift and energy, a Rioja that speaks more of vineyard and vintage than of wood, and does so with quiet confidence.

For when: you want something serious but still irresistibly drinkable.
Pairs with: grilled lamb chops, roast vegetables, or a late-night conversation.
If this wine were: a jacket, it’d be tailored leather — sleek, structured, timeless.

Finca Allende, founded in 1995 by Miguel Ángel de Gregorio in Briones, is one of the leading voices of the new Rioja, a generation of producers focused on terroir expression and precision over heavy oak tradition. The estate’s vineyards lie on the slopes surrounding the medieval hilltop town, planted at altitude on poor, clay-limestone soils that yield concentrated, aromatic fruit.

De Gregorio vinifies each plot separately, fermenting with indigenous yeasts and ageing the wines in fine-grained French oak to preserve purity and balance. The 2015 vintage is warm and beautifully ripe and shows Allende’s hallmark tension between richness and restraint. It’s Rioja redefined: elegant, mineral, and utterly authentic.

In the rolling hills around the medieval town of Briones, Finca Allende has become one of Rioja’s most visionary estates, a standard-bearer for the modern, terroir-driven movement that reshaped Spain’s most famous wine region. Founded in 1995 by the brilliant and uncompromising Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, Allende (meaning “further” or “beyond”) lives up to its name pushing Rioja beyond convention into a realm of precision, purity and site expression.

De Gregorio’s philosophy begins in the vineyard. The estate’s holdings, many planted with old-vine Tempranillo and Garnacha, stretch across the north-facing slopes of Rioja Alta, where clay-limestone and sandstone soils deliver fruit of exceptional balance and aromatic lift. Each plot is vinified separately, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in French oak (largely used barrels) to emphasise texture and minerality rather than overt oak flavour.

At Finca Allende, the goal is clarity: wines that reflect place before process. The results are beautifully poised, structured yet graceful, rich yet refined and unmistakably Rioja in accent, but Bordeaux in discipline. From the supple elegance of the Rioja Tinto to the profound depth of Aurus and Calvario, Finca Allende stands as one of Spain’s great modern estates: a perfect meeting of tradition, innovation, and quiet brilliance.
