2022 Crozes Hermitage, Saint Cosme

Rhône Valley, France

Deep ruby and full of intent, this Crozes-Hermitage delivers all the drama and poise you want from Syrah grown on the Rhône’s stony slopes. Aromas of blackberry, violet, smoked bacon and cracked pepper rise from the glass, joined by hints of incense and spice. The palate is rich, dark and textured with ripe fruit wrapped around savoury depth and that signature Saint Cosme lift. The finish seems to go on forever, equal parts power and grace.

For when: the night’s cool, the meal’s slow, and conversation’s deep.
Pairs with: grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef, or roasted aubergine with herbs.
If this wine were a sound, it’d be a low jazz note carried on smoke.

Louis Barruol’s Saint Cosme estate is one of the Rhône’s true artisans. His Crozes-Hermitage comes from granitic northern parcels, vinified with whole clusters to capture perfume and texture. The 2022 vintage shows the domaine’s signature intensity and finesse, a majestic interpretation of Crozes-Hermitage, rich and enveloping yet beautifully balanced.

Steeped in history, Château de Saint Cosme is nestled in the southern Rhône appellation of Gigondas and has been in the Barruol family for over 500 years. In 1992, fourteenth generation winemaker, Louis Barroul took over the reins of the estate from his father. Today, he is one of the most highly respected winemakers in the Rhône Valley and is affectionately referred to by fellow winemakers of the region as the ‘Genius of Gigondas’. With great determination and flair, he showcases the great potential of the Gigondas terroir with his outstanding parcellaire cuvées from individual old-vine vineyard plots. The estate has great geological diversity, as it is exceptionally located at the crosspoint of two geological faults, which is very rare. Over the years, Louis has also established his own ‘negoce’ wines, seeking out the spirit of soils and vineyards, working painstakingly with small batch fermentations, advancing hand in hand with wine growers who love what they do, while adding that special touch. This has enabled him to explore and master different terroirs, from which he consistently produces pure wines with a precise sense of place, personality and balance.

The crop was all destemmed before undergoing natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine was matured for 12 months in French oak casks, of which 20% were new, 40% were second use and 40% in casks had been previously used for a combination of two or three wines. Bottled without filtration.
