2023 Côtes du Rhône 'Le Caillou', Le Clos du Caillou
Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhone Valley, France
Deep ruby in the glass, this Côtes du Rhône is all about generosity and grace. Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and violet mingle with cracked pepper, wild herbs and a touch of garrigue. The palate is supple and full-bodied, with juicy dark fruit, silky tannins and a hint of spice running through to a warm, lingering finish. Plush yet polished, it’s Rhône comfort in a glass.
For when: the food’s rustic, the company’s real, and the night’s just getting started.
Pairs with: roast lamb, ratatouille, or anything charred on the grill.
If this wine were a fabric, it’d be soft velvet with a bit of swagger.
Le Clos du Caillou sits on the border of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where its old vines grow in the same sandy, stony soils that define the region’s finest terroirs. Le Caillou is crafted primarily from Grenache and Syrah, farmed organically and vinified with a light hand to preserve freshness and finesse. The 2022 vintage shows everything this estate does best - ripe southern fruit balanced by lift and purity, proving once again that elegance and generosity can share the same glass.

Bordering the legendary vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Le Clos du Caillou is one of the Rhône Valley’s most admired estates, a producer celebrated for its graceful, terroir-driven wines that balance power with poise. The estate’s origins date back to the 19th century, when its walled “clos” was mysteriously excluded from the official Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation during its creation in the 1930s, a historical quirk that left its vines, though identical in soil and exposure, classified as Côtes du Rhône.
Today, under the guidance of Sylvie Vacheron and winemaker Bruno Gaspard, the domaine farms organic and biodynamic vineyards across both appellations, producing wines that rank among the most elegant and expressive in the southern Rhône. Old-vine Grenache and Syrah thrive on the estate’s sand, galet and clay soils, yielding cuvées that combine supple fruit, savoury complexity, and a signature silky texture.
In the cellar, a gentle touch defines the philosophy: native yeasts, minimal extraction, and careful élevage in foudre and old barrels to preserve freshness and purity. The result is a collection that captures the quiet confidence of great Rhône terroir: wines of warmth, finesse, and unmistakable authenticity.
