2021 Vineyard Selection Malbec, Matias Riccitelli
Mendoza, Argentina
Deep, dark, and quietly magnetic, this Malbec captures everything we love about Mendoza in one glass, altitude, attitude, and effortless charm. Aromas of black cherry, violet, and cocoa drift up first, followed by hints of graphite, wild herbs, and spice. The palate is plush yet poised, with layers of ripe plum and blackberry lifted by a pulse of mountain freshness. Fine tannins wrap it all together in a long, silky finish that hums with energy and elegance.
For when: Dinner’s rich, the mood’s mellow, and the wine needs to do the talking.
Pairs with: Grilled ribeye, roast aubergine, or slow-cooked short ribs.
If this wine were: A dark cashmere coat it would be smooth, tailored, and quietly confident.
Born into one of Argentina’s great winemaking families, Matías Riccitelli has carved his own path, blending innovation with deep respect for Mendoza’s terroir. His Vineyard Selection Malbec brings together fruit from old-vine plots in Luján de Cuyo and the high-altitude terraces of Valle de Uco, where gravelly soils and cool nights yield wines of structure and finesse. Fermented in small concrete vats and aged in French oak, the 2021 vintage shows Riccitelli’s signature style, vibrant fruit, precise balance, and a touch of mountain wildness woven through every sip.

Perched high in the foothills of the Andes, Matías Riccitelli has become one of Argentina’s most dynamic and respected winemakers, a bridge between the country’s winemaking heritage and its new generation of innovators. After years honing his craft under his father, Jorge Riccitelli of Bodega Norton fame, Matías founded his own winery in Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo, in 2009, driven by a belief in site expression, minimal intervention, and unfiltered authenticity.
Riccitelli works with a mosaic of vineyards spread across Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, including some of the oldest Malbec plantings in Mendoza. Many of these sites sit between 950 and 1,400 metres above sea level, where cool nights, alluvial soils, and intense sunlight create the perfect balance between ripeness and tension.
Every wine is handled gently, hand-harvested fruit, wild fermentations, concrete vats, and carefully judged oak, allowing purity and texture to take the spotlight. The result is a collection of wines that redefine modern Argentine style: elegant rather than opulent, expressive rather than forceful, and always true to their mountain origins.
The grapes were meticulously sorted in order to select the best quality berries, which were then vinified in small concrete vats, with wild yeasts. Cold maceration took place for five days, to extract aromas, flavour and colour. The temperature was maintained at 26 to 28°C during fermentation, which was followed by post-fermentation maceration of 15 days, to impart structure and extract the pure fruit flavours. The wine was then transferred into French oak barrels of first, second and third use for 16 months.
