2020 Malbec Cahors Cèdre Heritage, Château du Cèdre
Cahors, France, France
Inky purple in the glass, this Malbec speaks fluently of its Cahors home, deep, poised, and quietly powerful. The nose unfolds with layers of black cherry, blueberry and plum, wrapped in notes of violet, graphite, and a touch of cedar. On the palate, it’s rich yet refined, the fruit concentrated but beautifully lifted by freshness and mineral tension. Silky tannins give structure without weight, leading to a long, savoury finish dusted with spice and cocoa. It’s classic Cahors with a modern polish, strength in balance, power in poise.
For when: the fire’s lit, the mood’s slow, and the food’s hearty.
Pairs with: roast duck, cassoulet, or a perfectly grilled côte de boeuf.
If this wine were a material, it’d be fine leather, smooth, strong, and timeless.
Château du Cèdre is widely regarded as the benchmark estate of Cahors, led by brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe, who have redefined what Malbec can be in its original French home. The vineyards, farmed organically for decades, sit on the limestone and clay terraces above the River Lot, where cool nights preserve freshness and complexity. The Cèdre Héritage is crafted from younger vines and aged in a mix of tank and large neutral oak, offering an approachable expression of the château’s elegant, terroir-driven style. The 2020 vintage captures everything that defines Château du Cèdre - depth, harmony, and that unmistakable Cahors soul.

The Verhaeghe family have been making wine in the Lot since the 1950s. Today it is Pascal and Jean-Marc in charge of the domaine, which is certified organic. They own three parcels of vineyards, the largest of which is 12.5 acres with stony calcareous clay which is called `Tran`, which plays an important role retaining heat and moisture. Drawing on his winemaking experience from California to Burgundy, Pascal delicately creates wines of great elegance and roundness, from IGP to AOP status.
