2024 Wild Chenin Blanc, Tumbleweed
Cape Coast, South Africa
“The Citrus Lantern”
Bright, textural, and just the right kind of untamed, the 2024 Wild Chenin Blanc from Tumbleweed captures everything we love about Swartland’s raw, sun-soaked energy. Aromas of quince, yellow apple and honeycomb rise from the glass, followed by hints of lemon peel, wild herbs and a touch of flint. On the palate, it’s lively yet layered with ripe orchard fruit wrapped in zesty acidity and a gentle grip from natural fermentation on the skins. There’s a beautiful wild edge here: vibrant, slightly saline, and full of texture, finishing long and dry with a whisper of spice.
For when: you want white wine with personality, not polish.
Pairs with: spicy prawns, roast chicken with preserved lemon, or sunset by the braai.
If this wine were a soundtrack, it’d be indie folk with a soulful twist - natural, grounded, and humming with life.
Tumbleweed Wines is a boutique Swartland project dedicated to crafting honest, small-batch wines that let the region’s rugged terroir do the talking. The brainchild of a group of young Cape winemakers who cut their teeth among the old bush vines of Swartland, Tumbleweed celebrates minimal intervention and maximum authenticity, wild fermentations, neutral vessels, and zero pretence.
Sourced from dry-farmed, old-vine Chenin Blanc rooted in decomposed granite and shale, the Wild Chenin Blanc embodies the essence of the region: concentration without heaviness, freshness born from resilience. The 2024 vintage, shaped by cool nights and steady ripening, produced fruit of exceptional balance. Fermented naturally and aged on lees for texture, it’s a wine that wears its name proudly - wild at heart, yet effortlessly composed.
