2023 Papa Figos' Douro Tinto, Casa Ferreirinha

Douro Valley, Portugal

Fresh, juicy and full of Douro character, Papa Figos opens with ripe red cherry, blackberry and plum, lifted by notes of violet, cracked pepper and a gentle herbal edge. The palate is supple and approachable, delivering bright fruit framed by smooth tannins and a subtle savoury twist that keeps everything balanced and food-friendly. It is vibrant rather than heavy, finishing clean, fresh and quietly satisfying.

For when: you want a red with personality that does not slow the evening down.
Pairs with: grilled meats, tomato-based dishes, roast chicken, or weekday comfort food.
If this wine were… a long lunch that somehow stays light on its feet.

Casa Ferreirinha is one of the Douro Valley’s most historic and respected names, founded in the 18th century and instrumental in shaping the region’s reputation for fine still wines alongside Port. Papa Figos takes its name from the colourful fig-eating birds native to the Douro and reflects a more accessible, modern expression of the valley. Blending indigenous varieties such as Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, and crafted with restraint in the cellar, the wine captures the Douro’s depth and warmth while prioritising freshness, balance and everyday drinkability.

Casa Ferreirinha was the first Douro producer dedicated entirely to making table wines, rather than Port. Its origins date back to 1952 when Fernando Nicolau de Almeida produced the first ever vintage of Barca-Velha and kickstarted the quality revolution in Douro table wines. Named after the legendary Dona Antónia Ferreira, one of the formidable widows of the world of wine, Casa Ferreirinha pays homage to the memory of this visionary woman. Today, the winemaking team is headed up by Luís Sottomayor, who restrains the Douro’s natural exuberance to produce wines that have a vibrant freshness allied to a lovely texture and depth.

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were gently destemmed and crushed. Maceration on the skins and fermentation at controlled temperatures took place in stainless-steel tanks with regular punch downs and pump overs. In order to preserve the bright and juicy fruit flavours of the grapes, there was no use of oak in the winemaking process and the wine remained in a mixture of stainless steel and concrete vats until bottling. Only light fining and filtration was carried out prior to bottling to preserve the quality of the aromatics.
