2021 Rioja Crianza, El Coto

Rioja, Spain

Bright, approachable and effortlessly drinkable, this Rioja Crianza opens with juicy red cherry, raspberry and plum, lifted by notes of vanilla, sweet spice and a gentle hint of toast. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, offering fresh Tempranillo fruit, soft tannins and a subtle savoury edge that keeps things interesting without weighing it down. Balanced and easy-going, it finishes clean and friendly, making it a Rioja that disappears from the bottle faster than planned.

For when: dinner needs a reliable red that won’t steal the spotlight.
Pairs with: grilled chicken, sausages, pasta dishes, or tapas on the table.
If this wine were… your favourite local bistro, relaxed, dependable, and always a good idea.

El Coto de Rioja was established in 1970 and has become one of the region’s most recognisable names, thanks to its extensive vineyard holdings and focus on consistency and balance. Drawing fruit from across Rioja Alta, Alavesa and Oriental, the winery combines modern vineyard management with traditional Crianza ageing in oak to create wines that are true to style and built for everyday enjoyment. The Crianza sits at the heart of the El Coto range, classic, accessible Rioja made with confidence and care.

El Coto was founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa and has grown from modest beginnings into one of the best known Rioja producers. Today El Coto has over 730 hectares of vineyard in production across the three Rioja DOCa sub-zones of Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. They also source grapes from all three areas, but mostly from Rioja Alavesa. Head winemaker César Fernandez oversees production, starting with hand picking into 35 kilogram crates to ensure the grapes arrive at the winery in pristine condition. Modern and intelligently designed, the emphasis in the winery is on temperature control and gentle handling of the grapes.

Fermentation took place in the Oyón winery, using stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks. Once fermentation was complete, malolactic fermentation occurred. The wine was then aged for a minimum of 12 months in 225L American oak barrels and a further six months in bottle before release. This extra six months in bottle isn't required by law, however, El Coto feels it enhances both the flavours and style of the wine.
