2022 Isabella Chardonnay, Muratie
Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa
For current Muratie owners Rijk and Kim Melck, there could be only one name for their Chardonnay, made from the free-run juice of hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed grapes, fermented naturally and then matured in 500l French oak for nine months: the name of their baby daughter, Isabella.
In this fresh and elegant wine with its peach-blossom fragrance, the aim is to evoke those bedtime butterfly kisses of their beautiful baby girl, so the oaking (10 months in this case) is subtle, serving only to spice the stone fruit, melon, and citrus flavours with hints of hazelnuts and vanilla cream. It’s beautifully delicate and understated, with a pure, slightly piquant and lingering ‘mineral’ finish promising great charm well beyond the toddler years.

Tucked beneath the rugged slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, Muratie Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s most historic and atmospheric wineries, a place where time feels beautifully suspended. Founded in 1685, Muratie is among the oldest wine farms in Stellenbosch, and its cobwebbed cellars, stained glass windows and ancient oak barrels still tell stories of the generations who’ve tended this land for over three centuries.
Today, under the custodianship of Rijk Melck and winemaker Hattingh de Villiers, Muratie continues to honour its heritage while crafting wines of authenticity, depth and soulful character. The estate’s philosophy is simple: minimal interference, maximum expression of site. The vineyards lie on decomposed granite and clay soils at varying elevations, producing wines that combine ripe Cape fruit with structure, freshness and a distinctive mineral core.
Muratie’s range spans the full expression of the Stellenbosch terroir from vibrant Sauvignon Blanc and textured Chenin to structured Shiraz to classic Cabernet Sauvignon. Each bears the name of a historical figure from the estate’s storied past, a tribute to the characters who shaped its enduring spirit.
More than a winery, Muratie is a living museum of Cape winemaking, a seamless blend of history, art and viticulture. Every bottle captures its essence: old-world soul with new-world vitality, a reflection of Stellenbosch’s timeless charm and Muratie’s unwavering devotion to authenticity.
The grapes were hand harvested before being whole bunch pressed. The juice was chilled to about 8 ̊C for two days. The clear juice was then taken off the sediment and pumped into 500 litre barrels where it underwent a combination of inoculated and natural fermentation. After the alcoholic fermentation (40% wild fermentation) the wine underwent 60% malolactic fermentation and spent 10 months in French oak before being racked and blended. It was then stabilised before it was bottled and labelled.
