2020 Rioja Reserva, Izadi

Rioja Alavesa, Spain

Elegant, poised and quietly confident, this Rioja Reserva opens with ripe red cherry, plum and raspberry, layered with sweet spice, vanilla pod and a touch of cedar from well-judged oak ageing. The palate is supple and refined, balancing juicy Tempranillo fruit with silky tannins, savoury notes of dried herbs and tobacco, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps everything beautifully in check. Mature enough to feel comforting, yet vibrant enough to stay exciting, it finishes long, smooth and effortlessly drinkable.

For when: you want a Rioja that feels classic, but never old-fashioned.
Pairs with: roast lamb, grilled pork, mushroom dishes, or Manchego cheese.
If this wine were… a beautifully restored mid-century townhouse, original character, modern comforts, zero fuss.

Bodegas Izadi is located in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, at Villabuena de Álava, where high-altitude vineyards, limestone soils and a cooler Atlantic influence shape wines of clarity and freshness. Founded in 1987, Izadi has become a benchmark for contemporary Rioja, championing old-vine Tempranillo sourced from dozens of small family plots across the region. The Reserva is crafted with precision rather than excess, combining traditional ageing in oak with a modern focus on fruit purity and balance. It’s Rioja with heritage at its core, expressive, elegant and unmistakably place-driven.

Izadi is based in Villabuena in Rioja Alavesa, the highest part of Rioja. The hillside winery (whose precipitous slope allows for gravity assisted production) was founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Antón as a modern breakaway from the traditional style of wine produced by other members of his family. As his son Lalo, who now runs the estate, says: "the whole concept of Izadi really started around wanting to produce wine to satisfy the needs of our friends over a meal". Izadi produces modern, international wines that are true to their roots and a natural expression of the area.

Grapes were destemmed and gently pressed, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with regular pump overs to extract the right amount of colour and tannins. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks before being aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, 20% of which were new, for a period of 16 months. The wine then spent more than two years ageing in the bottle before release.
