2020 'Coto de Imaz' Rioja Reserva, El Coto

Rioja, Spain

Comforting, polished and effortlessly familiar, Coto de Imaz opens with ripe red cherry, plum and raspberry, layered with vanilla, sweet spice and a touch of toasted coconut from classic American oak. The palate is smooth and rounded, delivering supple Tempranillo fruit framed by gentle tannins, savoury hints of leather and dried herbs, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps everything nicely balanced. It’s generous without being heavy, finishing soft, warm and reliably satisfying.

For when: you want a Rioja that everyone at the table will agree on.
Pairs with: roast chicken, pork dishes, tapas, or Manchego cheese.
If this wine were… a well-worn leather armchair - familiar, comfortable, and always inviting.

El Coto de Rioja was founded in 1970 and has grown into one of the region’s most respected producers, with an enviable range of vineyards across Rioja Alta, Alavesa and Oriental. The Coto de Imaz range represents the estate’s more traditional expression, built around Tempranillo and aged patiently in oak to achieve harmony and approachability. With extensive in-house cooperage and a focus on consistency and balance, El Coto combines scale with quality, producing classic Riojas that remain true to style while offering outstanding everyday drinkability.

El Coto was founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa and has grown from modest beginnings into one of the best known Rioja producers. Today El Coto has over 730 hectares of vineyard in production across the three Rioja DOCa sub-zones of Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. They also source grapes from all three areas, but mostly from Rioja Alavesa. Head winemaker César Fernandez oversees production, starting with hand picking into 35 kilogram crates to ensure the grapes arrive at the winery in pristine condition. Modern and intelligently designed, the emphasis in the winery is on temperature control and gentle handling of the grapes.

The alcoholic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks, with a maceration period of up to 18 days with frequent pump overs in order to achieve balance. This was followed by at least 18 months of ageing in American oak barrels. The wine was then further refined in the bottle for a minimum of 18 months.
