2016 Gran Reserva 904, La Rioja Alta
Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain
Elegance, Aged to Perfection.
The 2016 Gran Reserva 904 is Rioja refinement distilled, graceful, poised, and beautifully composed. Aromas of red cherry, plum and dried cranberry weave through layers of tobacco, vanilla pod, cedar and warm spice. The palate is silky yet vibrant, where supple fruit glides over fine-grained tannins and that signature Rioja Alta acidity lends lift and clarity. Subtle notes of leather, cocoa and sweet oak linger long into a finish that feels endless. It’s a masterclass in balance, richness without weight, maturity without fatigue.
For when: you want to pour quiet luxury into a glass.
Pairs with: roast lamb, duck breast, or aged Manchego by candlelight.
If this wine were a film, it’d be Casablanca, timeless, romantic, and impossible to forget.
La Rioja Alta, established in 1890 in Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación, stands as one of Spain’s most iconic and enduring wine estates. For over a century, it has embodied the classical Rioja ideal, patient winemaking, long ageing, and an unwavering commitment to balance and finesse. The estate’s vineyards in Rioja Alta are planted mainly to Tempranillo, with small additions of Graciano, grown on high, cool slopes of clay-limestone soils that produce fruit of freshness and longevity.
The Gran Reserva 904, first produced in 1904 to celebrate the winery’s merger with Bodegas Ardanza is crafted only in exceptional vintages. A blend of about 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, it spends roughly four years in La Rioja Alta’s own handcrafted American oak barrels, followed by extensive bottle ageing before release. The 2016 vintage, considered one of the most harmonious of the past decade, delivers a wine of exceptional purity and poise. Elegant, aromatic, and built to evolve for decades, it’s Rioja tradition at its most graceful and enduring.

"Gloriously, even defiantly, traditional in style, this is a still youthful Gran Reserva from a cooler vintage, featuring Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. Mocha, Asian spice and ash aromas lead you into a palate that's floral, elegant and refined, with layers of tobacco leaf, pomegranate and wild strawberry, sculpted tannins and acidity to age."

Few names embody the soul of traditional Rioja quite like La Rioja Alta. Founded in 1890 by five families in Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación, the bodega remains one of Spain’s most revered and steadfastly classical producers. Over more than 130 years, it has built a reputation for patience, precision, and unwavering respect for time, crafting wines that mature not just in oak, but in character.
The estate’s vineyards lie in the cool, high-altitude reaches of Rioja Alta, where clay-limestone soils and Atlantic influences yield Tempranillo of exceptional finesse and natural acidity. From these vines come wines that are born for ageing, vibrant in youth, transcendent with maturity. The grapes are vinified in a combination of tradition and control, then matured in American oak barrels made by La Rioja Alta’s own cooperage, ensuring absolute consistency of style and quality.
Their hierarchy of labels, Viña Alberdi, Viña Ardanza, Gran Reserva 904, and the legendary Gran Reserva 890, represents not just increasing age, but increasing depth and complexity. Each is released only when deemed ready, often more than a decade after harvest, offering drinkers a taste of Rioja’s past made freshly alive.
At La Rioja Alta, time isn’t just an ingredient, it’s the guiding philosophy. The result is wines that balance grace with gravitas, offering an ageless expression of what makes Rioja not merely a region, but a legacy.
The grapes were collected in boxes and transported to the winery in refrigerated vehicles to preserve all their integrity. After destemming and light crushing, the grapes were put in tanks where they underwent alcoholic fermentation for 17 days. Batches were selected and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation naturally over 75 days. In June 2012, the wine was transferred to four-and-a-half-year-old American oak barrels (made in-house), where it stayed until March 2015. During aging, the wine was racked eight times using traditional barrel-tobarrel methods. The final blend was bottled in November 2016.
